This Year in Industry degree provides the opportunity to spend your third year in an industrial environment applying the knowledge gained in your first two years of study. There is no direct entry on to this course but you can transfer from MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering after year two if you reach a high academic standard and are successful at interview with industry. Places are limited and highly competitive.

Years one and two provide a strong grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, communications, electromagnetics, power electronics and control. You will spend your third year on a placement in industry.

In the fourth and fifth years you will choose from a range of optional units and individual project topics, meaning you can focus on anything from electrical power systems to electronic communications.

The MSc Human Resource Management and the Future of Work is an intensive master’s-level specialist program for graduates who have a prior qualification in social sciences and wish to develop their knowledge and skills in the practice, theory and policy of the world of work.

The future of work has become one of the defining debates of our generation. Whilst the greening of our economies will create millions of jobs, many traditional forms of work will also disappear. BSc Chemistry with Scientific Computing combines study of the structure and synthesis of matter with development of computational and data analysis skills. It creates a new kind of scientist – one with a firm foundation in chemistry, a sound appreciation of scientific computing and an understanding of what can be achieved by combining them.

The course offers a unique combination of units and projects incorporating coding, machine learning and high-performance computing, with fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, and applications in analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

You will learn to design experiments, interpret results and apply computing skills to problems in chemistry, and you will take units in communications and mathematics.

Additionally, there is a final-year project. Options include working in a research laboratory or addressing a problem faced by researchers in academia, industry or a local school. You might develop science resources, explore computing applications or carry out chemistry education research. Regardless of the setting, an expert in scientific computing and a specialist in chemistry will both be involved.

This course is equally weighted towards sociology and philosophy and you will take units from both subjects throughout the course.

The sociology half of the degree places particular emphasis on sociological theory and its application to real-world concerns covering topics such as consumption, the environment, modern slavery, risk and food. Sociology also provides an opportunity to develop your research skills. The philosophy element offers you a thorough understanding of philosophy including logic and critical thinking, epistemology and metaphysics and a range of other units including ethics and political philosophy.

Suitable for graduates in economics, finance or a highly quantitative discipline, this programme combines advanced training in economics and econometrics with the chance to build expertise in finance. You will apply knowledge and techniques from both fields to areas such as financial markets and corporate finance, preparing you for a career in the banking industry or financial sector. This course provides an exciting intellectual challenge from the outset. In year one you will study physics, mathematics and philosophical topics such as metaphysics, the theory of knowledge and ethics.

Subsequent years allow you to study the overlap between physics and philosophy in depth. You will study the philosophy of science and the foundations and philosophy of physics.

The course gives you the opportunity to develop a physicist's broad range of skills, including problem-solving, numeracy and communication, and to supplement these with a philosopher's ability to rigorously analyse complex texts and form coherent arguments on complex subjects.

This programme provides an introduction to a range of debates within the so-called 'cultural turn' in sociological studies. Increasingly, sociologists are looking to the concept of culture as a source of explanation - and questioning - in their studies of contemporary social formations.

The MSc in Social and Cultural Theory addresses both theoretical and substantive elements of this cultural turn. The works of key thinkers within social and cultural theory are explored, while the role of cultural explanations within theories of race and ethnicity, gender relations and the sociology of religion (among others) is also given both theoretical and empirical consideration.

These issues are situated within the framework of analyses and critiques of wider debates and discourses in social and cultural theory. They cover questions such as postmodernism, postfeminism and postcolonialism.
