The sociology half of the degree places particular emphasis on sociological theory and its application to real-world concerns covering topics such as consumption, the environment, modern slavery, risk and food. Sociology also provides an opportunity to develop your research skills. The philosophy element offers you a thorough understanding of philosophy including logic and critical thinking, epistemology and metaphysics and a range of other units including ethics and political philosophy.

The Learning, Technology and Society pathway is designed for those who wish to take a critical perspective on the use of technology in diverse educational settings.

It is suitable for people with a variety of educational backgrounds and experiences, including teachers and lecturers, creative technologists and those who support informal learning settings such as museums and public spaces.

The pathway will provide you with a firm foundation for developing your career in teaching and facilitating learning in formal and informal settings, education leadership, research or learning technology. This course combines in-depth subject specialism in electrical and electronic engineering with interdisciplinary breadth, creative teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. Alongside your electrical and electronic engineering studies, you will apply your subject knowledge by translating ideas into plans for digital and creative enterprises, both social and commercial.

The course will equip you to use the critical, theoretical and practical skills central to electrical and electronic engineering, allowing you to develop your knowledge and skills across a range of areas. Engineering Modelling and Simulation has been developed from the needs of the aerospace industry for advanced multi-disciplinary modelling and optimisation techniques, and is applicable to other industrial sectors.

This course provides an exciting intellectual challenge from the outset. In year one you will study physics, mathematics and philosophical topics such as metaphysics, the theory of knowledge and ethics.

Subsequent years allow you to study the overlap between physics and philosophy in depth. You will study the philosophy of science and the foundations and philosophy of physics.

The course gives you the opportunity to develop a physicist's broad range of skills, including problem-solving, numeracy and communication, and to supplement these with a philosopher's ability to rigorously analyse complex texts and form coherent arguments on complex subjects.
