This course addresses the issues associated with a rapidly changing market and the demands for better, cheaper and personalised products, developed within the shortest possible time.

Ecological and ‘green’ constraints weigh significantly on engineering designers already and these pressures are likely to increase very significantly during the careers of today’s students. We consider the need for significant change in the design philosophy employed in industrialised manufacture and product development as well as responses to those pressures including legislation and standards, alternative processes and materials and design for resource economy at small and large scale.

Design engineers are problem-solvers who bridge the gap between traditional engineering and design. It's a discipline that draws on knowledge of product development, technical design, manufacturing techniques and rapid prototyping to bring new innovations to market. It also focuses on improving existing products and the processes used for making them.

Some of the greatest human achievements have come from creative design engineering, enabling the realisation of some truly remarkable change in our world. Design engineering has helped to transform the environment, create incredible super-structures on land and sea, and even helped people travel into the solar system.

Design engineering has also developed many of the most important systems and services, from individual right up to global and universal scales. These systems have supported radical scaling up of human activity in a huge range of areas.

Study with us

  • Combine design thinking with engineering knowledge and practice in this highly creative Masters degree
  • Address the issues associated with a rapidly changing market and the demands for better, cheaper and personalised products, developed within the shortest possible time
  • Focus on improving existing products and the processes used for making them

There are a number of ways you can study law at Strathclyde, one such way being the BA degree in combination with another subject.

Law is concerned with the study of the obligations, duties and rights which every member of society has in relation to one another and to the state.

The study of law is regarded not as purely vocational, but part of a broader education. Please note that studying law within the BA degree will not qualify you for entry to the legal profession. For professional qualifications in law, students follow the LLB programme.

Our main focus in psychology is the study of human behaviour.

You'll look at conditions of behaviour – how we learn, remember, coordinate our actions and interact with others – and the reasons for differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence.

Due to the popularity of the course and performance criteria for entry into Honours (Year 4) the numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited.

Study with us

  • Develop an awareness of law and the legal implications of business operations which is sought after by employers
  • Study the science of behaviour and the reasons for differences between individuals, across the lifespan
  • Access the resources of the Andersonian Library, one of the finest in Scotland, offering a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs
  • Acquire skills in communication, numeracy and critical thinking
  • Progress to our LLB (Graduate Entry) after completing a joint Honours degree with Law and another subject
  • Our BA degrees in Humanities & Social Sciences are initially broad-based. In Year 1 you'll study three subjects, including your chosen subject(s)

Product design engineering is an exciting industry that continually evolves alongside technology, product advancements, the demand for quicker turnaround times, unique and personalised products, and environmentally friendly supply chains and production.

It's about understanding product requirements and functionality, questioning existing ways of doing things and seeing opportunities to change things for the better.

Product design engineering blends a more technical engineering focus (such as mechanics, electronics, maths, engineering calculations of a products' design) with design principles, user experience, and technology to create new functional products or develop existing ones that can then be sold in competitive markets.

This is integrated with manufacturing processes, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design into reality which is fundamental to global market success and requires not only customer appeal, aesthetics and brand awareness but also consistent and correct functionality, superior quality and fitness for purposes all at a competitive price.

Study with us

  • Develop the skills to create fully-functioning new products which are visually appealing and efficiently manufactured
  • Learn to combine virtual and physical design and prototyping in our digital design suite
  • Undertake work placements in industry
  • Opportunity to undertake an industrial group project with a design engineering organisation
  • Professional accreditation by the Institution of Engineering Designers, Institution of Engineering and Technology and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Accreditation

  • Our Product Design Engineering degree has been awarded academic accreditation from two institutes. This demonstrates the degree meets the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) as outlined by the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP).
  • This accreditation is achieved through a panel of trained and expert accreditors looking closely at our programme’s content and delivery, including its relevance, coherence, challenge, assessment, staffing, quality assurance and resources.
  • The Accreditors also monitor that the programme is continually improving and in line with the latest best practice, providing assurance to our students that they are getting a relevant and quality degree.
