Civil engineering develops and improves facilities and services that society needs – from the supply of clean water and energy to the design and construction of roads, railways and stations.

Tall buildings such as the Shard in London or the new Queensferry Bridge across the Firth of Forth are exciting examples of civil engineering.

Our graduates develop and renew our towns and cities, and improve links with more remote communities.

Solving problems of air, land and water pollution and protecting society against natural disasters are also important aspects of civil engineering.

In recent years, our students have participated in the Constructionarium, attended Civil Engineering 4 Real and have taken part in our mentoring scheme involving graduate engineers with support companies such as BAM Nuttall, Sir Robert McAlpine, Tony Gee, Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors and Mott MacDonald.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the PGDE).

Economics aims to understand the activities of the different agents in the economy – consumers, producers and the government – and how they all fit together.

Statistics is the area of mathematics we use to explore and try to explain the uncertain world in which we live. You’ll be familiar with the use of statistics in opinion polls and market research. It is also central to the manufacture and testing of many products, and, in particular, showing that modern drugs are effective and safe.

The MSc Autism provides a critical understanding of the conceptual frameworks relevant to understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This Masters-level course enables you to understand complex cognitive and affective theories essential to supporting the autism profile.

Facilities

• The School of Government & Public Policy has a number of research centres that relate to the topics covered and the content of the course. For example, the European Policies Research Centre is a leading hub for the study of regional development policy and collection of such data in Europe, a centre that is of increasing importance in the wake of Brexit.
• Specialised policy centres focused on health and energy – such as the Centre for Energy Policy – also add to the applied policy environment at Strathclyde. The Institute for Future Cities' City Observatory, located in Strathclyde’s award-winning Technology & Innovation Centre, uses data to understand and address urban problems. The University also has many centres and institutes with projects that incorporate European governance and political issues, such as the Fraser of Allander Institute.

The aim of the MSc Economics & Finance is to produce highly skilled professionals who can analyse, understand and explain the complex economic and financial issues that arise in a globalised world. 

Jointly delivered by the Departments of Economics and Accounting & Finance, you will study the interaction between economics and finance, which is now critical to understanding the world we live in.

This full-time course will cover the practical, theoretical and technological aspects of 5G Communications Systems as they evolve over the coming years. You’ll gain expert knowledge of the latest technologies that will drive the next mobile, wireless and communications revolution, and evolve our current 4G environment to 5G communications enabled systems.

Applications will cover robotics & autonomous systems, UAVs, immersive systems and augmented realities, health monitoring, cyber-integrated systems, and smart grids. Data handling of the expected 50 billion IoT (internet of things) devices coming on-line to monitor traffic, weather, environment, smart agriculture, and even when your fridge runs out of milk, will also be explored.

5G will provide greater capacity, improved reliability, support at higher rates of mobility, and wider geographical coverage, at even higher data speeds and throughput and many new services and facilities.
