The MSc TESOL and Intercultural Communication degree is designed for those who intend to pursue a career in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It's also suitable for those who currently work in this field but wish to enhance professional knowledge and skills and improve career prospects.

The course addresses questions about the learning, teaching and use of English by speakers of other languages from an intercultural communication perspective. It draws on the expertise of educationalists, linguists, and literature/culture scholars.  

Course options enable you to explore issues across these disciplines or to specialise in one area. Recognising that the place of English is evolving rapidly in an increasingly complex multilingual and multicultural world, you'll be equipped with the theoretical and practical skills to teach English to learners with a wide range of social, cultural and communicative goals.

You'll gain a better understanding of language learning and language use in intercultural contexts. Industrial Placement

• You'll complete an industrial placement in the period from June to August, after you have completed the taught part of your degree, but before your final project. The Department will support you in making applications for industry internships. Please note that it's your responsibility to secure a work placement.
• You'll be fully supported by the University while on a placement. You'll be allocated a University of Strathclyde supervisor who'll act as your point of contact during your placement.

As a naval architecture student, you’ll learn to predict the stability and safety of ships, as well as their strength, speed, powering and propulsion requirements. You’ll discover how to calculate the motions of ships and other floating structures in rough seas, and how to estimate their reliability and safety in extreme conditions.

Ocean engineering deals with the technical aspects of fixed and floating marine structures and systems related to harnessing ocean resources. These include offshore oil and gas and the rapidly expanding area of ocean renewable energy, as well as other ocean resource activities such as subsea mining and aquaculture.

The degree aims to develop graduates capable of dealing with engineering challenges on a wide range of marine vehicles from tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and giant cruise liners to tidal current turbines and oil/gas platforms.

In addition to core Naval Architecture subjects, you'll study a range of specialised Ocean Engineering subjects and subjects related to the design of novel ship and offshore structures such as risk management and reliability analysis, station-keeping and control and subsea engineering.

These subjects have become increasingly intertwined in recent years, so there is a need for engineers with the ability to create and embed intelligence into the products and systems of the future.

Engineers with operational and technical expertise in both electronics and software engineering are needed to design the next generation of computer apps, interactive vehicle robotic agents that monitor driver information and respond accordingly, or digital cinema technology. This degree is designed to produce these skilled professional engineers.

The MSc Entrepreneurial Innovation & Technology is a highly practical programme that will help budding entrepreneurs conceive and crystallise their ideas about their venture start-up or new business project. 

You'll learn how to combine theoretical knowledge with a special focus on developing the applied skills required to engage successfully in entrepreneurial activity. 

The focus of this programme is the Virtual Incubator Project, during which you will work in groups to take your business idea to the next level. You will develop an innovative business opportunity and pitch to a panel of investors from the UK ecosystem.

Naval architects and marine engineers deal with the world’s largest moving structures and most powerful vehicles – from huge ships to sailing yachts, from fast ferries to offshore wind turbines and oil platforms.

Marine engineering is the engineering speciality of design, construction, installation and operation of machinery and propulsion systems for ships and marine structures.

This degree aims to develop engineers capable of dealing with engineering challenges on a wide range of marine vehicles, with additional skills and understanding in the impact and importance of marine engineering on their successful design, construction, repair, and maintenance.

In addition to core Naval Architecture subjects, you'll study a range of specialised marine engineering subjects, such as control theory and practice, electrical systems, design of marine engines (diesel, diesel-electric and gas turbine), propeller and shafting systems, system design and simulation, green technology and fuel cell technology.

This unique course, running since 2008 – the first of its kind in Europe – meets the needs of graduate students who want to contribute to environmental improvement and the circular economy, and learn how to identify and evaluate business opportunities. Students are accepted from all backgrounds (social sciences, arts, engineering, law, chemistry, maths, physics, geology, biology and business).

The course is suitable for anyone who'd like to refocus their career on environmental or sustainable entrepreneurship. You'll develop skills to enable you to launch new ventures, strategies, products and technologies that address society's environmental and natural resource problems. It's a collaboration between the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship.
