Sports design engineering concentrates on the conception, design and manufacturing of sporting equipment. Sports engineers work in nearly every sport, creating designs that meet specialised specifications to improve athlete performance, safety and sports product durability. 

For example, sports engineers could be involved with projects as diverse as designing new high specification football boots or fitness monitoring and improvement products, match and playing surface analysis equipment to developing image processing algorithms which act as analytical tools to determine strategic instances in a game.

The background our students gain in biomechanics also makes careers in medical device development and design a viable career route which is an exciting area due to the new and emerging sports and widening participation in sports for example prosthetics and guidance for partially sighted.

A sports design engineer requires expertise in many technical skills; from engineering design to understanding biomechanics of human movement, technology concepts to production techniques. This is integrated with manufacturing processes, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design and production process into reality which is fundamental to global market success.

• Our Sports Design Engineering degree has been awarded academic accreditation from two institutes. This demonstrates the degree meets the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) as outlined by the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP).

Manufacturing engineers and managers do not just create technological solutions though, they also motivate, organise and interact with others to make sure products and services are provided when and where customers’ needs exist.

The demand industry’s need for those skilled in this area continues to increase as the demand for quicker turnaround times, to meet the requirements of increasing global customers and to provide enhanced online shopping and service experiences grows progresses.

Manufacturing Engineering with Management blends a more technical engineering focus (such as mechanics, manufacturing, electronics, maths, programming, engineering calculations of a product's design) with production and management principles, and technology such as operational improvement and quality management.

This is integrated with manufacturing processes, design, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design and production process into reality which is fundamental to global market success. Considerations include environmental impact, reducing waste and increasing outputs to meet targets.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management has a range of innovative purpose built design and manufacture laboratories. Our students have access to a range of workshops and facilities including a digital design and manufacture studio. It brings together:

Software engineers design and develop large, complex systems. These include the systems used in vehicles, phones, large-scale financial systems and secure web and medical applications.

As a software engineer, you’ll need a good understanding of software, hardware, communication technologies and strong design and team skills. You’ll also need to understand the impact of the development strategies of different systems.

Our Computer Science courses combine theory and practice. Many of the core subjects are similar in the early years, which means it’s possible for you to transfer between courses.

Transfer to MEng Computer Science is possible for students who perform well in the first year of the BSc (Honours) Software Engineering.

Economics aims to understand the activities of the different agents in the economy – consumers, producers and the government – and how they all fit together.

Our degree will give you the ability to explain complex data in simple terms to different audiences. You’ll also develop excellent mathematical, statistical and problem-solving skills.

In Business Law, you’ll study commercial law and business legal regulations. These include company law, competition law and human rights law.

Business Law can only be studied as a second subject as a joint Honours option.

This MRes provides advanced study in Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control, within Europe and globally. The course is largely research and project-based but there is also a taught element to it.

This course is ideal if you are looking to further your knowledge and develop your research skills, contribute to new knowledge on environmental pollution and related topics.

An MRes offers a unique and bespoke experience; you can tailor your studies to suit your own research interests and career objectives. You will be taught by an interdisciplinary group of professionally qualified civil engineers, environmental scientists, geoscientists, and chemists. An MRes takes one year full-time or two years part-time to complete. While full-time study is available to UK and international students, part-time study on-campus is only available to students from the UK or EU. You can also study this course part-time through online Distance Learning, over 36 months, offering a flexible mode of study. Distance Learning is available to UK and international students.
