Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biochemistry and Microbiology

Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biochemistry and Microbiology

at University of Strathclyde United Kingdom

Overview

Biochemistry is the study of biological systems at molecular level. Biochemistry and the related field of molecular biology are important in understanding the molecular basis of life and its role in the disease process.

Microbiology is the study of the smallest living organisms (micro-organisms or microbes) and includes viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa. Microbes are a major cause of disease in humans but they can also be useful in industrial processes from pollution control to the production of important therapeutic compounds.

The opportunity to choose specific degree combinations will allow you to go into specialist biomedical science areas such as neuroscience, cardiovascular research, immunopharmacology, industrial immunology, drug research, biochemistry, microbiology and bacteriology.

Study with us

  • Study the smallest living organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa

There are a number of ways you can study law at Strathclyde, one such way being the BA degree in combination with another subject.

Law is concerned with the study of the obligations, duties and rights which every member of society has in relation to one another and to the state. Please note that studying law within the BA degree will not qualify you for entry to the legal profession. For professional qualifications in law, students follow the LLB programme.

The study of law is regarded not as purely vocational, but part of a broader education.

As a politics student, you'll look at the work of governments and their policies and study the behaviour of those who govern - and who they are governing - both at home and abroad. You'll also gain knowledge of domestic and international institutions and issues relating to conflict and cooperation.

We cover diverse and relevant issues, such as international terrorism to the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum.

Politics graduates go on to work in a number of areas, with many pursuing academic research careers in the UK, Europe and North America.

Study with us

  • Develop an awareness of law and the legal implications of business operations which is sought after by employers
  • Access the resources of the Andersonian Library, one of the finest in Scotland, offering a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs
  • Progress to our LLB (Graduate Entry) after completing a joint Honours degree with Law and another subject
  • Our BA degrees in Humanities & Social Sciences are initially broad-based. In Year 1 you'll study three subjects, including your chosen subject(s)

The course covers areas such as recruitment and selection, training and developing and managing conflict at work. These are an important part of the management process in all organisations.

In Psychology, you’ll study human behaviour. Psychological research is motivated by the desire to understand both general behaviour (how we learn, remember, co-ordinate our actions and interact with others) and the reason for the differences between individuals such as personality or intelligence.

A joint Honours degree is not accredited for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership by the British Psychological Society.

Study with us

  • Learn about recruitment and selection, training and developing, diversity and managing conflict at work
  • Study the science of behaviour and the reasons for differences between individuals, across the lifespan
