Our main focus in psychology is the study of human behaviour.

You'll study conditions of behaviour; how we learn, remember, coordinate our actions and interact with others. You'll also study the reasons for differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence.

Due to the popularity of the course and performance criteria for entry into Honours (Year 4), numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited.

Studying history – the story of humanity through the ages – develops your knowledge of the past and gives you a better understanding of the present.

Our classes cover some of the most important and interesting historical periods at home and abroad, including Scotland’s ‘Highland Problem’ in the 16thcentury, Slavery in World History and Cold War Europe, 1945-1991.

Education is essential if you wish to study initial teacher education courses. We offer you the chance to develop knowledge of the education systems of Scotland and beyond, looking at issues including policy, social justice, equity and inclusion.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the PGDE).

For many, the perfect way to combine a passion for sport and technology is through a career in sports engineering.

Sports design engineering concentrates on the conception, design and manufacturing of sporting equipment. Sports engineers work in nearly every sport, creating designs that meet specialised specifications to improve athlete performance, safety and sports product durability. 

For example, sports engineers could be involved with projects as diverse as designing new high specification football boots or fitness monitoring and improvement products, match and playing surface analysis equipment to developing image processing algorithms which act as analytical tools to determine strategic instances in a game.

The background our students gain in biomechanics also makes careers in medical device development and design a viable career route which is an exciting area due to the new and emerging sports and widening participation in sports for example prosthetics and guidance for partially sighted.

A sports design engineer requires expertise in many technical skills; from engineering design to understanding biomechanics of human movement, technology concepts to production techniques. This is integrated with manufacturing processes, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design and production process into reality which is fundamental to global market success.

• Our Sports Design Engineering degree has been awarded academic accreditation from two institutes. This demonstrates the degree meets the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) as outlined by the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP).
• This accreditation is achieved through a panel of trained and expert accreditors looking closely at our programme’s content and delivery, including its relevance, coherence, challenge, assessment, staffing, quality assurance, and resources.
• The Accreditors also monitor that the programme is continually improving and in line with the latest best practice, providing assurance to our students that they are getting a relevant and quality degree.

Social workers have a responsibility to promote the rights of powerless people, protect the vulnerable and disadvantaged and address the causes and effects of offending behaviour.

Validated by the Scottish Social Services Council and closely aligned to the Standards in Social Work Education, the degree will give you a recognised professional award in social work. It will also prepare you for the challenging role of being a social worker.

You'll have the opportunity to work/study abroad, thanks to our well-established links with the University of Greensboro, North Carolina in the United States and an exchange agreement with the University of Malta.

This integrated Masters programme is for students who wish to follow a research career in physics. The course provides in-depth learning and additional research opportunities for highly ambitious and motivated students. The degree is designed to accept students directly into second year.

Industrial placement

• We recognise the key links between physics and industry and many start-up companies and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland owe their existence to physics-based ideas. This is why we offer our students the chance to undertake an industrial placement during the break between Year 3 and Year 4. These placements are offered on a competitive basis.

Ninety percent of world trade is carried by sea. You'll gain an understanding of the subjects essential for effective and efficient management of ships and fleets. This course allows you to develop multidisciplinary interests and skills by working with other areas of naval architecture, ocean and marine engineering.

As a graduate you could expect to work in the industry as a technical ship superintendent or manager.

Civil engineering develops and improves facilities and services that society needs – from the supply of clean water and energy to the design and construction of roads, railways and stations.

Tall buildings such as the Shard in London or the new Queensferry Bridge across the Firth of Forth are exciting examples of civil engineering.

Graduates of our civil engineering degrees develop and renew towns and cities, and improve links with more remote communities.

Solving problems of air, land and water pollution and protecting society against natural disasters are also important aspects of civil engineering.
