Our BA degrees in Humanities & Social Sciences are initially broad-based. In Year 1, you'll study three subjects, including your chosen subject(s).

History

• Studying history – the story of humanity through the ages – develops your knowledge of the past and gives you a better understanding of the present.
• Throughout your studies, you'll receive excellent training in areas such as problem-solving, communication, research methods, and interpretation.
• Our classes cover some of the most important and interesting historical periods at home and abroad, including Scotland’s ‘Highland Problem’ in the 16th century, Slavery in World History and Cold War Europe, 1945-1991.

Journalism, Media & Communication

• Today’s media industry expands beyond traditional print and broadcast journalism. It includes professional bloggers and vloggers, freelance writers and editors, podcasters, people working in entertainment TV, radio, or film, creators of video games and interactive apps, promoters of ideas and products, and many others.
• The most successful professionals in today’s media are not only highly skilled in reporting, writing, editing and pitching their material, but they are also excellent communicators online and offline, and problem-solvers. They are innovative and entrepreneurial, bold and curious, open-minded and collaborative. These are also some of Strathclyde’s core values, which guide our own teaching, research, and public engagement.
• Pursuing the BA in Journalism, Media and Communication will engage you in useful learning in a broad professional context, which includes a critical understanding of the media industry, while acquiring technical and professional skills in journalism, communication, information design and management, and using them in the dynamic media market of Glasgow and beyond. It will also allow you to take a second subject, which will enhance your expertise and university experience even further.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and provides a route for you to achieve Chartered Engineer status.

It has been developed to provide high-calibre mechanical engineering graduates with an in-depth technical understanding of advanced mechanical engineering topics together with generic skills that will allow them to contribute effectively post-graduation.

The course helps you to become a specialist in the area of aerospace. You'll also have the opportunity to take modules in general skills such as project management and risk analysis. These are necessary skills for any professional aerospace engineer.

You'll look at conditions of behaviour – how we learn, remember, co-ordinate our actions and interact with others – and the reasons for differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence.

Due to the popularity of the course and performance criteria for entry into Honours (Year 4) the numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited.

Social Policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. Key social policy issues examined include poverty; economic, race, age and gender inequality; social justice health; education; criminal justice and housing.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This programme gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective. It draws on disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, psychology, social anthropology and politics.

The combination of mechanical, electrical, electronic, computing, measurement and control elements are now an important part of most modern engineering systems and are essential to meet new challenges in engineering innovation.

Examples include energy generation, hybrid petrol/electric vehicles, aircraft design, satellite technology, robotic systems and technology for a sustainable environment.

This degree covers key areas of both electrical and mechanical engineering reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of modern engineering. There's a demand for graduates with expertise within and across the boundaries of both disciplines.

To be an effective power engineer you need a good knowledge of underpinning technologies and user and application requirements. You also require a firm understanding of the business and regulatory landscape that national and multinational power and utility companies must work within.

This course brings together advanced expertise in all aspects of electrical energy and power systems, complemented by studies in electricity markets and power systems economics.

• The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) – this programme is CEng accredited and fulfils the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer when presented with a CEng-accredited Bachelors programme.

The MSc requires you to take a range of classes from subject areas in chemical & process engineering, sustainability/environmental engineering and multidisciplinary skills. You'll take four in chemical & process engineering, two in sustainability/environmental and two in multidisciplinary skills.

Group project
You’ll work with a group of students from different pathways of the Sustainable Engineering programme. You’ll produce sustainable solutions to real-life industry problems. This project will include site visits, field trips and progress reports to industry partners.

Individual project
An individual research project is offered where you'll be working with our highly talented team of leading researchers on chemical engineering issues of the future.
MSc students will study a selected topic in depth and submit a thesis.Successful completion of eight modules, the group project and an individual project leads to the award of an MSc.
