Biochemistry is the study of biological systems at molecular level. Biochemistry and the related field of molecular biology are important in understanding the molecular basis of life and its role in the disease process.

Microbiology is the study of the smallest living organisms (micro-organisms or microbes) and includes viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa. Microbes are a major cause of disease in humans but they can also be useful in industrial processes from pollution control to the production of important therapeutic compounds.

The opportunity to choose specific degree combinations will allow you to go into specialist biomedical science areas such as neuroscience, cardiovascular research, immunopharmacology, industrial immunology, drug research, biochemistry, microbiology and bacteriology.

Industrial placement

• We recognise the key links between physics and industry and many start-up companies and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland owe their existence to physics-based ideas. This is why we offer our students the chance to undertake an industrial placement during the break between Year 3 and Year 4. These placements are offered on a competitive basis.

This course helps you to get a deeper insight into the necessary cyber-physical technologies and new developing business models.

Industry 4.0 concepts are revolutionising the world and modern industry is adopting rapidly and at a vast scale, creating new business models and digital technologies. Products are becoming increasingly customisable and interactive.

The power of digital manufacturing also allows creating agile and autonomous production processes that can deliver at scale through smart global digital communication technologies. Industry business models are also shifting significantly; extensive mass customisation is augmented by direct prosumer engagement and services become instantaneous and ubiquitous.

Digital manufacturing utilises Industry 4.0 technologies such as Cyber Physical Systems, Industrial Internet of Things, Additive Manufacturing and Autonomous Mechatronic Systems. Social Policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. Key social policy issues examined include poverty; economic, race, age and gender inequality; social justice health; education; criminal justice and housing.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This programme gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective.
