Chemical engineers play a vital role in finding solutions to 21st century challenges, such as providing people with clean water, medicines, food and fuel.Our graduates design and operate industrial processes that turn raw materials into valuable products, minimising their environmental impact.

Other projects include a team-based Frontiers of chemical engineering project in Year 1 and various research projects throughout other classes.

With more than 500 million native speakers, Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the world. Speaking Spanish will help you conduct business more confidently in countries that are becoming increasingly important in world markets.

Following the recent global economic crisis, economics is more important and relevant than ever. Decisions on money, banking, interest rates, taxation and government spending affect us all with global consequences.

Economics aims to understand the activities of the different agents in the economy – consumers, producers and the government – and how they all fit together.

Our degree will give you the ability to explain complex data in simple terms to different audiences. You’ll also develop excellent mathematical, statistical and problem-solving skills.

This course is designed across three semesters, with each class intended to develop not just the skills aspiring writers need, but the right skills at the right stage in their development. The structure of the MLitt gives writers the freedom to pursue their chosen forms and genres in terms of their creative work, while providing guidance and support in an academic context too. The Convener of the MLitt in Creative Writing is the award-winning novelist, short story writer, editor and biographer Rodge Glass, author of Bring Me the Head of Ryan Giggs, Stories for the EasyJet Generation and Alasdair Gray: A Secretary’s Biography.

The Department of Marketing at Strathclyde is recognised as one of the leading centres of marketing education and research in the UK.

This course will help you develop the skills for a variety of marketing and management careers. You’ll understand customer requirements, added-value products and services and the role of communications in customer satisfaction.

Business Law covers the general principles of commercial law and business legal regulations. These include company law, competition law and human rights law.

Business Law can only be studied as a second subject as a Joint Honours option

In this course, we offer you the chance to develop knowledge of the education systems of Scotland and beyond, looking at issues including policy, social justice, equity and inclusion.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the PGDE).

We also offer some of the best teaching in Human Resource Management (HRM) in both Scotland and the UK.

HRM is about the relationship between employers and employees and the ways in which people are managed in the workplace. Speech and language therapists assess and treat a wide variety of speech, language and communication problems. Our course, which provides a route into this profession, is the longest established in Scotland and one of the oldest in the UK.

The four-year Honours degree programme covers four subject areas:

You'll take part in work placements throughout the four years.

Studying with us you'll learn how to read and interpret accounting information in the annual reports of businesses and the financial information within the public sector and become familiar with the principles and practice of presenting information to those who manage all types of organisations.

Accounting at Strathclyde is fully accredited for entry to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in the majority of study combinations, as well as offering possible exemptions to other professional bodies, eg Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

In response to employers, studying Hospitality & Tourism Management here at Strathclyde gives you the chance to study this subject in the context of management, strategy, marketing, enterprise, economics and ethics.

This degree will prepare you for leadership roles in this dynamic industry which generates £5 billion to the Scottish economy and creates one in 10 jobs. You’ll have the skills to manage operations and business across a range of industries including hospitality, tourism and events.

Social Policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. Key social policy issues examined include poverty; economic, race, age and gender inequality; social justice health; education; criminal justice and housing.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This program gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective. It draws on disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, psychology, social anthropology and politics.

Human Resource Management (HRM) covers areas such as recruitment and selection, training and developing and managing conflict at work. These are an important part of the management process in all organisations.

Civil engineering develops and improves facilities and services that society needs – from the supply of clean water and energy to the design and construction of roads, railways and stations.

Tall buildings such as the Shard in London or the new Queensferry Bridge across the Firth of Forth are exciting examples of civil engineering.

Our graduates develop and renew towns and cities and improve links with remote communities.

Solving problems of air, land and water pollution and protecting society against natural disasters are also important aspects of civil engineering.

In recent years, our students have participated in the Constructionarium, attended Civil Engineering 4 Real and have taken part in our mentoring scheme involving graduate engineers with support companies such as BAM Nuttall, Sir Robert McAlpine, Tony Gee, Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors and Mott MacDonald.
