Pure Mathematics modules combine the work of some of the world’s greatest thinkers, while Applied Mathematics addresses real-world problems in biology, data science, climate science and finance. Many third and fourth-year modules offer glimpses of the latest research.

The four-year MMath shares the same core as the BSc but enables you to explore areas of interest in greater depth, both through specialised fourth year modules and via a substantial Research or Maths-in-Action project.

Study abroad

We encourage students to consider spending Year Three at one of 23 European partner universities in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.

This course examines the political and social dimensions of history and international relations. We examine how historical events, actors and institutional legacies have influenced the world we live in today. And we discover complementary insights that can be gained from combining historical and political research. Together we will explore the theory and the reality of why people and states interact in the ways they do.

The two subjects complement each other - one exploring historical events and trends, and the other understanding how those legacies shape politics today. The two Departments in which you will learn (History and PAIS) approach shared research areas such as globalisation, conflict, democracy and human rights from different perspectives. You will explore themes in political, religious, cultural or social history, and will be able to select optional modules in both Departments to explore specialist themes and geographic areas in more detail.

Students will be offered the opportunity at the start of their second year to apply for an optional intercalated year of study abroad or year's work placement, or a combined year of study and work placements.

Following the application process, those students who are offered and take up a study and/or work placement place transfer to the four-year History and Politics (with a Year Abroad) course, with the Year Abroad or work placement as the third of the four years.

Study abroad

History and Politics students have the opportunity to join history students for a term in Venice at the start of year three. You can also apply for an intercalated year at one of the partner universities offered by either the History Department or the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS).

The Student Mobility Team based in the Office for Student Opportunity offers support for these activities, and the History Department's dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator and the PAIS Director of External Affairs can provide more specific information and assistance.

The MSc in Economics and Health Economics is for graduates in Economics who would like to advance their knowledge and specialise in Health Economics through a postgraduate-level degree. Students will gain a thorough grounding in advanced core areas of microeconomics and econometrics, and will have the opportunity to understand how economic theory and methods can be employed to offer solutions to issues and debates around health and health care provision. An 8,000-word dissertation provides an opportunity to explore your own interests across these fields of study.

By studying linguistics together with Japanese, you will explore the fascinating human capacity for language, while also building your fluency in Japanese. As a linguist, you will learn about the structure and function of language, and about relationships between language and society.

You will also study and practice written and oral communication in Japanese, and learn broadly about communicating across languages and cultures. Your skills in linguistic analysis will support your language learning, and your knowledge of Japanese will complement your work as a linguist. This course opens many career opportunities that require the knowledge and skills of both a modern language and a deep understanding of language, culture and communication.

This MA will enable you to study Philosophy at an advanced level, offering an extensive range of optional modules that give you the flexibility and the freedom to explore your own philosophical interests. The breadth and depth of research expertise in the Philosophy department means that we can offer you an unusually broad range of options for Master’s level study.

The Department has strengths across all core areas of analytic philosophy and continental philosophy, with particular strengths in: Philosophy of Mind and Psychology, Epistemology, Aesthetics, Moral and Political Philosophy, Post-Kantian Continental Philosophy, and 20th Century Continental Philosophy.

On this unique degree we will encourage you to think independently as you work with experts from across the University. You will create critical responses to both problems in the contemporary world and problems in different times and places. This course is ideal for students interested in taking charge of their own learning and becoming leaders in and outside of the classroom.

The core modules on this course are led by tutors with a passion for liberal education. Using a Problem-Based Learning approach, these modules focus on investigating issues from different disciplinary perspectives. You will learn how to analyse problems and you will investigate and evaluate evidence and interpretations. We will also encourage you to develop your own responses. The core modules will help you to build a toolkit of primary and secondary research skills. They will also prepare you to engage with confidence in different modules across the University.

At the end of the first year, you will choose a pathway. Your pathway allows you to select modules that give you the knowledge, skills, and expertise to be a leader in your area of interest. We will work with you to guide and support your decision about which pathway to follow. We understand that your interests will develop over time, so there is scope to adapt your pathway.

We believe that the skills you develop during your degree are as important as the course content. You will have the opportunity to complete co-curricular certificates and work placements. These will help you develop your professional skills, giving you the edge when it comes to your employability. You will also have the support of our dedicated Employability and Placement Manager, who will provide one-to-one careers guidance.

If you want to broaden your perspective by studying overseas, we can support you to apply for a year's study abroad. You will also have the option to complete a year-long work placement. Students are automatically enrolled on the three-year course. You will have the option to change to a four-year course with an intercalated year in the third year. The intercalated year spent studying abroad or on work placement is subject to departmental academic requirements.

Our BSc in Digital Healthcare Science has been developed as a result of a recognised need from healthcare organisations for a new type of healthcare scientist equipped with digital and further transferable skills.

The programme focuses on the following four sciences: Behavioural Science, Healthcare and Physiological Sciences, Science of Digital Healthcare and Science of Shared Clinical Decision-making. You will gain a breadth of scientific training, and develop the knowledge and skills to work with digital technologies.

The course will be a mix of taught sciences and practical placements. Each year, the four sciences will be blended into a number of concentrated learning blocks. Between these blocks, you will complete a programme of activities including an average of one day per week on a clinical setting placement or other relevant health placement. Your third year continues to build on this and addresses practice and research in more depth.

Following an in-depth foundation in biochemistry, this course broadens out to allow a focus on more specialist fields. These include biophysical chemistry, which covers biological macromolecules at the atomic level, and understanding the genome and gene regulation.

Our exceptionally wide range of options allows you to pursue areas that interest you. You will graduate with a sound understanding of the biochemical and structural basis of molecular, cellular and development processes in a variety of organisms.
