You’ll develop an understanding of the processes that occur within and between organisms, through to investigating global systems and the influences that drive changes in these settings. Ecology at York ranges from studying the fundamentals of evolution, to the structure of populations and communities, and applications in conservation and environmental biology. You will build a solid foundation in theoretical concepts, which you will supplement with valuable experience in the field, and we have a dedicated field course in each of the first three years of the programme. As an ecologist, your focus on understanding our ecosystems and the processes occurring in them will be vital in helping us to work towards sustainable and effective solutions around current and future global challenges, whether around climate change, feeding the world sustainably or tackling diseases.

Adding a year in industry or a year abroad are both an option with this course too, so you can benefit from the advantages that a year away can bring. Our course provides a detailed foundation in how language works in terms of speech sounds, grammar, meaning and social aspects. You'll then deepen your knowledge and skills in linguistic specialisms that you choose, by engaging with the theories and techniques of current linguistic research. You'll be able to apply your skills and knowledge to linguistic data, and have practical training in techniques used in linguistic analysis.

With world-class tutors you'll gain knowledge, and you'll be introduced to key research questions and methodologies. You'll also be able to perform original research in linguistics.

This programme is ideal for those with an interest in language who have not previously studied linguistics in depth.

Develop an in-depth understanding of the nature of contemporary armed conflicts, transitions from war to peace, and challenges of post-war peacebuilding.

Explore the context of contemporary armed conflict and war, and subsequently how peace is forged at the local and national levels, all the time taking into account the interplay between domestic and international actors.

You'll have the opportunity to undertake a fieldwork placement, where you'll apply your skills to a professional setting and conduct research to inform your dissertation.
