Our BA Human Geography and Environment builds the skills, knowledge and capacities for understanding and developing solutions for pressing 21st century social and environmental challenges. It draws on cutting-edge insights from human geography and environmental studies to critically explore the complex relationships between people, places and environments. Our Genetics course examines how the massive innovation in DNA sequencing technologies has revolutionised our knowledge and understanding of living systems, and makes it a particularly exciting time to be studying this subject.

This course is ideal if you want an interdisciplinary approach to Genetics. You will have a wide range of options to tailor the course to your developing interests.

Genetics encompasses the molecular studies of genes and genetic engineering, through human genetics and disease, to population genetics. Our increasing knowledge of the human and other genomes will continue to have a great impact on biotechnology, medicine and conservation.

Adding a year in industry or a year abroad are both an option with this course too, so you can benefit from the advantages that a year away can bring. The Department of Biology will provide you with the opportunity to learn in new, spacious and modern teaching laboratories which provide excellent facilities for practicals and small group project work, alongside our state-of-the-art computing facilities.

Combine the study of German and Italian with investigations into the nature of language itself. Spend a year abroad studying, working or teaching in Italy and German-speaking countries, consolidating your language skills.

You'll be taught in German and Italian, so you'll become confident using your languages as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of German and Italian culture and societies which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator in both languages.

Your communication skills will be complemented by investigations into the science and structure of language through a range of linguistics modules. The course has flexibility in terms of how much German, Italian and linguistics content you study over the four years. Engage with heritage conservation in a broad interdisciplinary context and develop a unique mix of practice-based and theoretical learning for your professional work or further research in the conservation sector.

You'll learn essential disciplinary knowledge and advanced scholarship techniques with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sustainable building conservation practice. You will engage with practical and professional issues in a series of focused skills modules from an exciting range of related disciplines and develop your own experience in practice, whilst benefiting from the knowledge of our experienced practitioners.

A voluntary work placement in a conservation organisation in the York region will enhance and focus your practice-based experience and you will develop your research skills in an original, independently conducted research project.  

Established in 1972 and drawing on our wide range of department expertise, the MA Conservation Studies is particularly suitable if you are interested in a broader interdisciplinary approach to conservation such as cultural heritage management, digital heritage, landscapes, period-based or international conservation work.

Environmental geography focuses on the physical environment and its effect on humans.

Understanding the integration of physical and environmental geography has never been more important than it is today to address the environmental challenges facing the world.

This course covers aspects of physical geography such as sea level change, glacial and coastal environments and environmental hazards. It also covers other areas of environmental geography such as biogeography, Geographical Information Systems and sustainability. You'll have opportunities to study the human impacts on the environment through the study of natural resource management, environmental law and policy and environmental economics.

Astrophysicists look to the skies to discover more about the nature of our Universe.

From the nuclear reactions that power our sun to the mysteries of dark matter, you'll study the great challenges of cosmology in topics aligned with our active research.

To explore the cosmos you'll need grounding in many disciplines of physics, from optics to electromagnetism, quantum physics to classical mechanics. You'll gain foundational understanding of fundamental physics, scientific principles and methods. You'll learn key skills for analysing real-life problems, write scientific reports to industry standards, communicate complex concepts, and solve mind-bending astronomical puzzles.

In your third year, you'll apply and develop your skills on a paid industrial placement. This gives you the chance to gain practical, real-world experience, enhancing your degree and your CV.
