BA Archaeology and Heritage brings together a depth of knowledge about the human past with a practical understanding of why that knowledge is important for society today. You'll explore different interpretations of heritage and gain practical skills in communicating our past to the public. You'll delve into questions tackling the conflict around heritage and explore how we can protect it for the future.

Theoretical physics provides the tools for constructing the mathematical framework of the physical world.

On a foundation of advanced physics, you'll build your understanding of theoretical techniques. You'll use mathematical analysis and an array of computational methods to address complex problems. You'll learn key skills of analysis and research, write scientific reports to industry standards, and simulate huge physical systems using our supercomputers.

Work with world-renowned physicists using sophisticated equipment to probe the nature of existence and push the boundaries of research. You will learn to utilise supercomputers like York's own Viking cluster, developing parallel code to model complex physical systems

These teams have to be directed, organised and inspired by managers, who are often engineers of considerable talent and experience.

Drawing on expertise of our Engineering Education and Management research group, this course will equip you with a strong background in modern electronics, combined with specialised knowledge in the techniques of business and industrial management. Material culture tells the story of people and their things: allowing us insights into the significance that objects held for people in the past.

Interweaving practical and theoretical approaches to material culture, this course explores ethnoarchaeological and experimental archaeological approaches to objects, alongside functional analyses of a broad range of artefact types.

You will discover the theories underpinning our understanding of the material world while developing invaluable practical skills such as designing and executing your own experimental archaeology project, the analysis of microscopic wear and residue traces, working with objects from excavations and museum collections or making a short documentary film for the heritage sector.

Whatever your period of interest is, this course will equip you with the skills and experience you need to begin a career in cultural heritage, academia, or commercial archaeology.

Develop your knowledge of electronic, electrical, mechanical and mechatronic principles as you learn how to design solutions to today's biggest engineering challenges. You'll work on group engineering design and project work at every stage, incorporating real-world examples with societal impact. This course is designed for those with experience of teaching English as a second language.
The one-year programme is designed for students with at least one year’s teaching experience who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning of the English language. Like MA ALLT, it is expected that students will already have an understanding of the main approaches to language teaching and language analysis. The course will provide rich opportunities for reflection on practice, and for the development of the understanding underlying principles and theories of English language teaching and learning. There is also a broad range of option modules to choose from in Term 1. Teaching and learning activities include presentations by the tutor, small group discussions and practical activities (individual and pair work).  Summative assessments take the form of written assignments, exams, oral presentations and dissertations.

Environmental geography focuses on the physical environment and its effect on humans.

Understanding the integration of physical and environmental geography has never been more important than it is today to address the environmental challenges facing the world.

This course covers aspects of physical geography such as sea level change, glacial and coastal environments and environmental hazards. It also covers other areas of environmental geography such as biogeography, Geographical Information Systems and sustainability. You'll have opportunities to study the human impacts on the environment through the study of natural resource management, environmental law and policy and environmental economics.

Products and services are taking on more authority over activities that have the capability to pose a risk to human lives. System safety professionals address a web of interlinked contributing factors to assess the safety of these products or services.

This course will equip you to understand the contribution technology, humans and organisations make to product and service safety. You'll learn how to articulate how and why you believe these aspects have been addressed. You will also learn how to discuss the level of confidence it is possible to have in the mitigation and assurance processes undertaken throughout a product or services lifecycle.

Throughout the duration of the course you will increase your skills in systematic thinking about all these issues. You will be challenged to consider the ethical characteristics of the activities you undertake and decisions you make to ensure that you are able to act professionally and competently. You will have the opportunity to assess a range of scenarios addressing multiple aspects of systems, services, and associated processes, across multiple domains and the lifecycle. We will take you out of your experience base to challenge your existing knowledge, skills and behaviours.

It brings together safety professionals from many different domains (aerospace, military, automotive, railway, nuclear) to ensure your learning is as varied and as comprehensive as possible.
