The Department of Art at Arkansas State University will provide an educational environment that fosters the creation and understanding of art. Students in art develop insight, sensitivity, and perception toward all aspects of nature while building individual expressive responses. Aesthetic and functional values, creative ideas, and media skills are developed through instructional guidance and applied experience in the studio and classroom.

Learning Outside the Classroom
Some of the courses may involve field trips to Memphis Brooks Museum, The Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, or other regional art collections. Arkansas State University is an Accredited Institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Why the BFA?
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs are designed to prepare students for professional careers as a classroom art teacher, graphic designer, or studio artist. The BFA in Graphic Design is the initial professional degree, and it is the requisite degree for the student who plans to pursue a studio-oriented post-baccalaureate degree.

The accounting major prepares students for rewarding careers as industrial accountants, cost analysts, controllers, tax accountants, members of financial regulatory teams such as the IRS or banking auditors, independent auditors in CPA firms, and internal auditors. A-State accounting graduates work for manufacturing firms, in government agencies, in banking, in not-for-profit entities, and in public accounting.

The B.A. in English is the quintessential Liberal Arts Degree. English B.A. graduates are likely to be seen anywhere -- sitting in a law school class; reading in a coffee shop on the campus where they teach English; working in a government office; working as a technical writer trying to rephrase something from computer-speak to ordinary English ; or preparing for the ministry in a seminary. If you love literature or if feel a need to be writing, you have found the right degree.

The Master of Science in Engineering (MSEng) program provides a research thesis based, advanced education in engineering. The program of study leading to the MSEng degree presents an advanced cross-disciplinary understanding of engineering sciences, experimental methods, modeling, and fabrication techniques. The goal of the MSEng program is to provide an educational experience focusing on the integration of research and technology development that allows graduates to be successful in deriving solutions to society’s most challenging technical problems. The program culminates in the defense of an original research thesis.
Specific program outcomes are listed below. Program graduates will have:

• Knowledge of advanced experimental methods and the ability to design experiments and collect data
• A good understanding of statistical concepts and an ability to apply this knowledge to achieve engineering solutions that most efficiently use information and resources
• A practical knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing techniques, specifically at the micro- and nano-scales
• An ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts to model physical systems and engineering processes to drive knowledge based design
• An advanced, cross-disciplinary understanding of engineering sciences, and an ability to relate physical concepts from multiple engineering disciplines
• An ability to identify critical issues, formulate realistic solutions, evaluate alternatives, and carry out independent research to provide novel solutions to technical problems
• A demonstrated ability to make novel, significant contributions to the scientific and engineering body of knowledge.

The M.S. degree is particularly attractive for students who do not plan a career in basic research, but who want to work in the field of chemistry or a closely related field.

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre is a 120-credit hour degree program designed to provide students with professional-caliber training within the framework of a liberal arts education with specific coursework in acting, directing, design, literature and history.

Emphases  in Acting

Students in the Acting emphasis select elective courses in scene study, dance, voice and speech, movement, stage combat, audition techniques, and Shakespeare performance.

Our traditional mode of the MPA program provides you with two tracks to choose from Public Management and Non-Profit Management. Our program doesn’t require the GRE, is NASPAA accredited, and one of the most affordable master’s programs in the country. With students from all over the world and nationally recognized professors, our MPA program will provide you with a close-knit family, bringing perspectives, passion, and knowledge from all around the world.

Additionally, if you are a current A-State undergraduate student and want to pursue an MPA after you graduate, you can do so by starting off during your senior year through our new 4+1 program. The focus of the B.S. Mathematics degree program at Arkansas State University is to provide students with the opportunity and the direction to pursue the intellectual challenges of mathematics; and to provide the mathematical knowledge necessary to function competently in graduate school and/or in a career requiring mathematical skills.  Students graduating with the B.S. Mathematics degree will have a strong foundation in the fundamental notions of mathematics, including rigorous proof, and will possess valuable skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and the effective communication of mathematical concepts and models.  Coursework includes exposure to physics, programming, and electives that allow students to explore various topics in applied and pure mathematics and statistics.  The flexibility within the B.S. Mathematics degree allows for optimal preparation for graduate study in mathematics or statistics and prepares B.S. Mathematics students for pursuing careers as an actuary, mathematician, operations research analyst, or statistician; and for other jobs in business, industry, or government that have math as an essential job skill.

Majors in the Department of Criminology, Sociology, and Geography are prepared for many professions including teaching, government service, law, business, research, cartography, and community planning; and for professional careers within the criminal justice system such as police, truancy and probation officers, parole officers, and correctional and research personnel.

The program in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health will provide a comprehensive and quality education to students wishing to become occupational safety or environmental health practitioners in a variety of industries represented in the lower Mississippi Delta region, the state of Arkansas, and beyond.  The program curriculum will encompass a wide variety of basic areas of study including science, mathematics, statistics, and communication followed by more specialized coursework in occupational safety and environmental health topics.  Students will also have the opportunity to gain relevant experience in partnership with community private or public sector industry in an internship towards the end of their graduate career.  Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to enter their respective fields as general practitioners and be prepared to complete certification exams necessary for career advancement.  This program will give students the necessary background to develop and lead occupational and environmental safety and health programs and aid organizations in maintaining compliance with applicable environmental, health and industry safety regulations.

• Completion of program support coursework with a “C” average or better.
