Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is an interdisciplinary degree program designed to provide a rigorous introduction to the complex interrelationships that exist among societies in the modern world. It combines the study of international relations, global and development issues, and contemporary belief systems with a concentration on a major world area. In addition, the degree aims to equip students with the skills in language, analytical thinking, research, and economic literacy that are necessary for graduate study and careers in international fields.
Students in the International Studies program receive direct exposure to an international environment by participating in a foreign study program or an internationally-oriented internship in the United States. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, this program emphasizes the ways in which the expertise and methodologies of various disciplines contribute to the understanding and resolution of international issues.
The program provides a broad understanding of international issues and world cultures through exposure to the various methodologies of the social sciences and liberal arts. It offers pre-professional study for careers in government, communications, business, law, journalism, and international non-profit organizations. Students are encouraged to combine a major in International Studies with a second major or minor in a field appropriate to their career plans.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Bachelor of Arts in Asian American Studies
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian American Studies provides an interdisciplinary approach to explore the diverse histories, cultures, communities, and contemporary realities in Asian America. It is designed to offer students an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the complexities of Asian American experiences and to prepare them to function in a multiethnic society and multicultural world. The communication and critical analysis skills which are stressed in the program will be instrumental to students pursuing postbaccalaureate degrees in “traditional” disciplines, including History, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, and Literature; in interdisciplinary programs like Ethnic Studies and Women’s Studies; and in professional fields such as Law, Business Administration, and Social Work. The program’s curriculum and broad liberal arts perspectives likewise will prepare students for employment in several professions, including education, public policy, community development, media, social services, and human resources. Admission to the program requires completion of the G.E. Foundation courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program.

Bachelor of Arts in Dance - Dance Science Option
The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. Bachelor of Science in Mathematics - Applied Mathematics Option (STEM)
This option emphasizes mathematics frequently used in applications. The student may choose one of two suboptions: the first is aimed at applications in science and engineering, the second at applications in economics and management. Students are prepared for careers in industry, business, and government and for graduate study in applied mathematics.
Students majoring in the B.S. in Mathematics (all options) who would like an enriched academic program that includes a thesis may complete the Honors in the Major program described here.
May also complete General Honors through the University Honors Program, in which case the thesis requirement may be met through the Honors in the Major.

Bachelor of Arts in Japanese
The Bachelor of Arts program in Japanese at CSULB is designed to provide students with linguistic and cultural preparation supported by international perspectives and understanding of humanities for personal, social, intellectual and cognitive development as well as development of skills for economic self-sufficiency in the ever-intertwining world of global economy.
The program is different from a traditional literature-oriented language program. It emphasizes pragmatic language studies aiming for acquisition of communication skills through communication-oriented and content-based instruction. The program provides knowledge of language and culture to develop appropriate understanding and attitudes for intercultural communication.
Students with background in Japanese language competency gained through home use or through primary or secondary school work in the U.S. or Japan must take a placement test administered by the Department.

The Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) degrees program is jointly housed in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, reflecting its inherent interdisciplinary nature. A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science as well as a minor are available.

Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions
The Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions (MA_HXDI) is comprised of 33 semester units. The program prepares students and/or returning professionals from diverse undergraduate backgrounds for advanced multidisciplinary design work in careers of their choice. Through the MA_HXDI program, students will develop expertise in the tools and methods of experience design as a strategy for making and adding value to systems, products, spaces, and services. Through a diverse faculty and collaborations with leading organizations, students will use cutting-edge technology tools while developing novel solutions to complex challenges. These tools provide both the quantitative data to support the qualitative research of human-centered design, as well as the digital interactions of contemporary human communication and experience. This ‘theory plus practice’ approach prepares students to smoothly transition into the broad spectrum of professional design roles, from design research to interaction design. Through research labs in the department of design, students have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, independently and through collaborations with business, government, education, entertainment, health care, and technology organizations.
