Biology Major
As a Bachelor of Arts in Biology major, you can expect to study a wide array of scientific subjects — from the inheritance of traits and evolutionary mechanisms to animal physiology and plant identification — all within a framework of ethics, vocation, and faith.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Psychology majors are rigorous yet flexible programs designed to meet the American Psychological Association Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology major while also fulfilling SPU’s mission to provide students with a transformative and holistic experience grounded in Christian faith.

As such, these programs prepare you with extensive knowledge of the field; scientific and critical thinking skills; an awareness of diversity, ethics in practice, and social responsibility; effective oral and written communication skills; and professional-level training and experiences (e.g., research and internship opportunities) for both careers and graduate school in psychology.

Psychology (BA)

The BA in Psychology is designed for students with a broad range of career and graduate school interests such as, but not limited to, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, social work, school counseling, and industrial and organizational psychology.

Clinical Counseling Psychology: For students interested in working within a therapeutic context, this track focuses information and experiences relevant to clinical psychology, counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, as well as related graduate programs or jobs providing or researching the effectiveness of therapy or counseling.

You may earn a BA in Interior Design and/or Interior Design Merchandising. Curriculum for the Interior Design major educates and trains you for a variety of entry-level positions in interior design such as residential, commercial, and hospitality design, and in specialization areas such as lighting.

Curriculum for the Interior Design Merchandising major educates and trains you for a variety of entry-level positions in retail or wholesale operations, sales, and promotion components of merchandising products used in interior spaces such as furniture, textiles, and lighting.

In either major, your courses will involve interdisciplinary courses with art; business; and family and consumer sciences. These majors require completion of the Family and Consumer Sciences Core, which includes:

SPU’s BA (bachelor of arts) in Computer Science emphasizes problem-solving, organizing and synthesizing ideas, and applying computing theory. It’s an especially good choice if you’re going to double major, or minor in another field. With this degree you’ll be well prepared for projects that apply computing to other disciplines.

In this program you’ll cover the field’s major topics in 15 Computer Science courses, along with applied calculus, computer math, and statistics. In a senior project you’ll apply computer-based problem-solving techniques to an area of interest.

Chemistry forms a foundation for the study of a wide variety of scientific disciplines. It is concerned primarily with matter, energy, and their interactions. Chemists are both creators and problem-solvers who do everything from create new substances to analyze criminal evidence. They are at the forefront of efforts to make sure that technology serves people, rather than the reverse. GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT STUDIES MAJOR
Global Development Studies (GDS) is an interdisciplinary, pre-professional program that combines liberal arts classes in global development issues with applied learning from courses in economics, business, health science, environmental studies, and theology. The GDS major provides students with a firm theoretical foundation in sustainable global development and also professional and technical skills in global development management. The GDS major aims at bridging the gap between theory and practice through developing hands-on project management skills and engaging students with both hypothetical and real-world problems. You will understand global development challenges and the means to resolve them at both the local and global levels from a Christian perspective.

The GDS major equips you with a comparative understanding of development in both developed and developing nations through directed study, applied skills training, analytical research, and direct cross-cultural experiences including an internship experience with local and international development organizations.

SPU’s BS (bachelor of science) in Computer Science gives you a well-rounded blend of scientific, quantitative, computing, and engineering foundations to prepare you for a career or for graduate studies.

Are you a musician with a desire to help people cultivate their physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual well-being through music? The Music Therapy Program — the first and only Music Therapy program in Washington state — offers many opportunities for musicians to use their skills and aptitude to serve others through the functional use of music.

The program is designed for you to develop entry-level competencies required as a professional music therapist, prepare you for a six-month clinical internship, and, ultimately, pass the national board certification exam to earn your Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) designation.

Our goal is to provide you with a personalized education of classroom and practical clinical experiences that will allow the music therapist within you to develop to meet professional standards. In this shared journey, you will become increasingly aware of who you are as a musician and how your music can affect the spiritual, mental, physical and psychological well-being of others.
