The mission of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering is to offer undergraduate and graduate programs of excellence in engineering that serve the needs of the West Florida region, the state, and the nation. The goal of these programs is to prepare students for a successful professional career in their respective chosen discipline of study.

The Computer Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET.  ABET is the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology and is among the most respected

The program’s educational objectives are to ensure:

• Graduates of the program will be successful in the professional practice of engineering or related fields and will advance in their chosen careers.
• Graduates of the program will be successful in pursuing advanced degrees in engineering or related fields

The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program prepares graduates to work with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organisations within medical and behavioral health settings, with a special focus on military populations. The Master of Social Work program at UWF develops advanced practitioners who can demonstrate clinical and critical thinking skills necessary to assist clients in a broad range of dilemmas and settings.

A B.S. in Health and Physical Education prepares you for positions in teaching, the health and fitness industry, recreation services or for graduate study. We offer two specializations: Fitness and Sport Coaching, and Physical Education Teacher Education.

The B.S. in Physics focuses on the study of matter and its motion.  Ultimately, the goal of physics is to understand how nature behaves from the smallest sub-atomic particle to the entire universe, making it the most fundamental natural science. The various topics covered include electricity and magnetism, electronics, fluids, mechanics, optics, quantum phenomena, concepts of relativity, thermodynamics, waves, and several related laboratory activities.

The Physics Department offers the traditional B.S. program in Physics with specializations in Physics or Engineering Physics.  In addition to graduate school, a trained physicist may enter the employment market as a research scientist. Those with an engineering physics background are eligible for entry-level jobs as engineers in organizations such as the Department of Defense, NASA, and the various national labs.

Students interested in obtaining certification to teach this subject area in secondary education need to contact an advisor in this department to carefully plan the course work to satisfy degree and some teacher certification requirements. A degree in this major is required for participation in teacher education certification options.

The M.A. program is designed for students interested in acquiring a broad view of political science or who wish to specialize in international relations. The program consists of 33 semester hours plus successful completion of a comprehensive examination or a thesis. All new students should be advised by the departmental advisor.

The College of Business at the University of West Florida is accredited by AACSB International, the highest level of accreditation available to a college or school of business.  As such, the College believes that it is in the student's best interest to take all junior/senior level BSBA Core, Major, and Major-related courses at UWF.  These courses are typically taught by academically or professionally qualified faculty members as defined in the College's policy on faculty qualifications.

Undergraduate transfer credit for degree programs in the College of Business is awarded consistent with specifications in the UWF Catalog  and the requirements of Florida's Common Numbering System.

Normally, the College of Business will not accept transfer credits as equivalent to UWF 3000/4000 level business-related courses from institutions not accredited by AACSB International.

Students should seek guidance from their College of Business academic advisors on these matters.

What You Will Learn

The program is based heavily on hands-on experiences where you will have the opportunity to utilize a variety of state-of-the-art laboratories, research tools and equipment.

In the Exercise Science specialization, you are prepared to successfully acquire nationally recognized certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

In the Physical Education and Sports Performance specialization, you will learn how to lead individuals in various physical activity settings, including education, sports, fitness, wellness and health. You will examine, evaluate and apply research on skill development and learning in physical education, coaching and physical activity.

The M.S. in Environmental Science provides advanced research and educational opportunities in the earth and environmental sciences. Departmental areas of concentration include coastal science, paleoclimatology, landscape ecology, geographic information science, aquatic biogeochemistry, and soils science. The program includes both thesis and non-thesis tracks. The non-thesis track provides a foundation for employment in the private and public sectors of the environmental fields. In addition, the thesis track prepares students for advanced study leading to the doctoral degree. Contact the department for information regarding the graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The B.A. in History is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to research and interpret the past. Emphasis is placed upon active participation in the creative process of historical inquiry.

Students planning to go to graduate school are strongly advised to attain proficiency in foreign languages.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a major in Management Information Systems (M.I.S.) emphasizes information as a resource to be managed, planned, and controlled in much the same way as other organizational resources. This program of study presents the concepts and methods of analyzing, designing, planning, and managing simple or complex information systems within an organization. In addition, M.I.S. emphasizes the managerial aspects of information systems by providing a base of business instruction common to the College of Business programs.
