The College of Public and International Affairs Bachelor, BA, in Criminal Justice and Human Security degree program, allows students interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice to develop expertise in the international dimensions of public safety.

Students in the degree may choose from one of three areas of concentration

• Human Security
• Comparative Justice
• Criminology

The degree requires two years of college-level study of a foreign language or demonstrated working competency in a foreign language. Students have the option of choosing from Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and French.

Qualified students also have the option of earning a Masters degree in Business Administration or in Global Development and Peace by completing a fifth year of study beyond the normal years.

UB Criminal Justice track students are also encouraged to take courses in Martial Arts. Internships with law enforcement agencies are also available.

Learning Outcomes

The B.A. in Criminal Justice & Human Security has the following learning outcomes

• Students will demonstrate the progressive acquisition of the oral, written critical thinking skills needed to succeed in graduate level study as well as the required skills for careers in domestic and international security
• Students will be able to identify the essential elements of criminal justice
• Students will be able to articulate the importance of Human Security and explore its impact on domestic and international security
• Students will demonstrate the language skills and intercultural understanding required for effective law enforcement in today’s globalized society
• Students will be able to describe the role played by religious, ideological, and cultural views; ethnic and tribal identities; and economic status in rationalizing criminal behavior
• Students will demonstrate an understanding of the role played in criminal behavior by socioeconomic inequities and societal injustice, resulting from domestic and non-domestic events
• Students will be able to comment on the role played by non-state actors in areas such as the identification of norms, the acceptability of violence and terrorism in promoting policy changes and in preventing crime.

The accounting curriculum provides an opportunity for students with varied interests to obtain a broad-based understanding of the role of accounting in the measurement and communication of financial and economic data. In the Bachelor's Degree in Accounting - BS program, a number of interdisciplinary courses have been designed for those students wishing a maximum overview of multinational issues in accounting and taxation as well as for those students who intend to pursue more advanced studies in accounting. Accounting students who expect to take the Certified Public Accountant professional examinations should select elective courses with the approval of and in consultation with the Chair of the Accounting Department.

• Students acquire the knowledge necessary for the understanding of business data and will master accounting concepts, principles, and theories.
• Students will develop technical skills necessary to measure, analyze, and interpret economic data.
• Students will understand internal accounting systems, controls, reports for decision making and will learn how to effectively communicate economic data.
• Students will study professional and regulatory requirements. Additionally students will acquire the accounting foundation that enables them to pursue advanced study required for the successful completion of the CPA exam.
• Students will pursue internships.
• Students will have the opportunity to apply to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program where they will gain hands-on, real world experience.

The UB Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering Technology, BS degree program is designed to address the need for graduates with skills in computer programming, computer hardware and computer networks. The Computer Engineering Technology program provides students with the opportunity to focus on applications and implementations more than theory and conceptual design. This program is open for new enrollment and for transfer students from community colleges.

The Computer Engineering Technology program at the University of Bridgeport will prepare graduates with the skills necessary to enter careers in the design, application, installation, programming, networking, and operation of computer systems. Graduate students are well prepared for development and implementation of computer systems and networks.

Engineering programs often focus on theory and conceptual design, while engineering technology programs usually focus on application and implementation. Engineering programs typically require additional, higher-level mathematics, including multiple semesters of calculus and calculus-based theoretical science courses, while engineering technology programs typically focus on algebra, trigonometry, applied calculus, and other courses that are more practical than theoretical in nature.

In the recent years, biology has been modernized with the development of new and sophisticated techniques in molecular and cellular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics.

These techniques are utilized today in various areas of research, from genetics and differentiation to biomedicine, field studies, and animal behavior. At UB's Bachelors and Associates Major BA, BS Degree Programs in Biology, the department’s program of study and research reflect this modern view of biology. Students are exposed to modern concepts, and current methods of experimentation in molecular biology, genomics, and field biology within introductory courses taken at the outset of their studies. Motivated students have the opportunity to choose advanced courses, which are given in the specialized areas of faculty research.

By completing the Biology program, students will:

• be able to read and interpret current biological literature, formulate scientific hypotheses, design and execute experiments, and analyze and interpret data

The Masters in Computer Engineering MS Degree Program is a course of study intended to prepare individuals whose undergraduate background is in computer or electrical engineering for advanced professional work in the field and for further study leading to the doctorate.

Emphasis is placed on current state-of-the-art applications including parallel computing, image processing, VLSI design, sensing, robotics, mobile computing, automation and the like.

A music degree from the University of Bridgeport will provide students with the preparation they need to build a career in today’s music world. UB has been training musicians since 1947. We offer an experienced and dedicated faculty of artist-teachers, the kind of personal attention and advising usually found at small colleges, and the sort of spacious and well-designed facilities typically found at large universities.

Our Bachelor of Music degree provides pre-professional training in music, including concentrations in Music Business, Music Education, and Music Performance.

The UB School of Education offers a master’s degree that leads to initial Connecticut certification in several subjects, including Music Teaching Certification (K-12). This program welcomes musicians from a variety of backgrounds who wish to become state-certified in music. The Master's in Science Chinese Herbology (MS-CH) program joins the MS-Ac degree program and the MS-TCM degree program within the Acupuncture Institute and is a part of the Health Sciences Division which also includes physician assistant, nutrition, naturopathic medicine, chiropractic, and dental hygiene.

The MS-CH program will be primarily residential with students completing 50% of their course work and 100% of their clinical rotations in residence. The Asian/Chinese Herbology (ACH) courses will be offered in the blended format with 50% of the didactic program offered online and 50% during 4 weekends each semester, and an additional 3 weekends each summer for a total of 11 weekends a year. Students will participate in an online environment to complete their Asian/Chinese Herbology studies.

The MS-CH is limited to those who currently hold licensure or registration as healthcare professionals. The MS-CH program will not expand graduates’ scope of practice. There is no independent licensing for Chinese herbal practitioners in the US. Please consult your state’s licensing authority regarding state-specific scope of practice for licensed health practitioners in the area of herbal prescribing.

The MS-CH degree can be used as preparation for the national board exams in Chinese herbology only by those who have accredited acupuncture degrees. Only upon passing the requisite NCCAOM exams in Chinese Herbology, practitioners may use the title “Diplomate in Chinese Herbology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Chinese Herbology M.S. program, the graduate will have the ability to:

• Demonstrate competency in utilizing the four examinations to identify Chinese Herbology diagnoses
• Formulate and skillfully implement the safe and effective clinical application of Chinese medicine modalities based upon a total assessment of the patient
• For the Chinese Herbology M.S. : Formulate and skillfully implement safe and effective acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese herbal medicine, qi cultivation, tui na, and other adjunctive techniques
• Adapt diagnosis and treatment strategies as needed for diverse patient populations
• Evaluate patient care from biomedical, pharmacological, and Asian perspectives in order to understand the medical context in which patients present, make appropriate treatment and consultation decisions in various healthcare settings as part of a collaborative health care team, and make timely referrals when appropriate
• Value patients’ dignity and confidentiality
• Apply knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient-centered care in a variety of settings in order to optimize patient health and coordinate care with other healthcare practitioners

The Medical Laboratory Science program prepares students for an exciting career, for which employment prospects are significant. The UB Medical Laboratory Science program has achieved national accreditation through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

What is Medical Laboratory Science?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics defines Medical Laboratory Science as follows: Clinical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Clinical laboratory technologists, also referred to as clinical laboratory scientists or medical technologists, and clinical laboratory technicians, also known as medical technicians or medical laboratory technicians, perform most of these tests.

The UB Bachelor of Science degree program in Finance provides an integrated view of the theoretical and practical aspects of finance for those who are preparing for careers in financial management, financial institutions, financial markets, law, government service, and related fields.

Essential skills in problem-solving are developed with an emphasis on wealth maximization. Financial problems are viewed from both their micro-financial and macro-financial aspects.

The Finance major includes the subject areas of corporate financial management, banking, and investments. The program provides an integrated view of the theoretical and practical aspects of Finance for those who are preparing for careers in financial management, financial institutions, financial markets, law, government service, and related fields.
