Writing Studies includes communication, rhetoric, social media studies, journalism, literacy and language, and community writing. It is a rapidly growing field and a vibrant part of the English Major at Drew, applying the close reading and critical thinking skills of the major to a broad array of public texts and contexts. Philosophy
The study of philosophy is to embark on conceptual exploration. Philosophers seek rational answers to enduring questions about knowledge, reality, value, thought and language. From the time of Socrates to the present day, philosophers have examined fundamental presuppositions of science, morality, governance and art. Philosophy demands close thought. It fosters careful augmentation and clear writing.

International Year One in Computer Science will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Drew University.Upon successful completion of International Year One and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at Drew University or at a number of well-known US universities. Progression is the transition from an INTO program to a university degree program.

Cybersecurity
Our cybersecurity major is interdisciplinary, includes the foundations of software security, and has flexibility through elective offerings so students can opt to choose emphases in software, systems, or interdisciplinary contexts. By the end of the courses in the major, students will be able to identify common vulnerabilities in a software system and propose appropriate countermeasures and mitigation solutions according to best security industry practices. They will also be able to critically evaluate legal and ethical issues in cybersecurity practices and solutions.

BIOCHEMISTRY & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY is the study of life at the molecular level. Drew’s abundant research opportunities strengthen your résumé as you look for graduate schools or employment in industry after graduation. Our majors intern at Merck, Johnson & Johnson and other global pharmaceutical companies. Available as a major or minor program of study.The intersection of biology and chemistry provides an integrative focus for understanding the molecular processes of life, and students engage the material using contemporary methods of biochemical analysis and molecular biology. The curriculum consists of required courses which provides a strong background for further study in both fields and electives allow students to personalize their major and pursue their interests in either biology, chemistry, or both. A key component of the BMB program is the pursuit of at least one semester of original research, mentored by a member of the Drew faculty. These opportunities provide close collaboration between students and faculty, and often result in published manuscripts and presentations at national scientific conferences.

Historically, the field of public health has focused on preventing the spread of contagious diseases among population groups through a variety of means including health education, medical intervention and water quality control. Today’s public health policy makers, researchers and practitioners confront a daunting array of challenges to the health of various population groups at home and abroad and their environments. Public health research is shaping policy debates over disease prevention, health care reform and climate change.

This multidisciplinary program encompasses the biomedical sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. Our curriculum enables majors to examine public health problems from a number of different disciplinary perspectives. The major offers a population-level approach to solving health problems with a strong focus on scientific, social and ethical principles. Public health majors through their research projects  and coursework acquire the methodological skills needed to assess the prevalence and incidence of illnesses, disorders and disabilities in specific population groups. Public Health majors develop a mastery of health care policy issues and an in-depth understanding of the many public health programs administered by federal, state and local  government and international agencies. Upon graduation, they are prepared to do epidemiological research or participate in health policy making and program implementation.

Our proximity to New York City and major media and publishing companies in New Jersey provides opportunities to intern pretty much anywhere, and our many alumni in the fields of writing and communication provide opportunities for mentorship during and beyond your years at Drew–both for those pursuing internships and for those considering graduate school. Drew’s Center for Internships and Career Development will also work with you to help you find an internship that draws on your interests and and extends your coursework.

Upon successful completion of International Year one and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at a number of well-known US universities.
This transition from an INTO program to a university degree program is called progression. You must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA per semester to remain in good academic standing in the Pathway program at Drew.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

The marketing major is a liberal arts program that takes an integrated, multidisciplinary, and critical approach to the study and practice of marketing. The major encompasses courses that emphasize strategic planning, data analysis, communication skills, and teamwork.  We will soon be offering a New York semester in marketing that gives our students the opportunities to meet with marketing experts and visit leading marketing firms.  Our graduates are prepared to work across many private and public organizations in a wide variety of marketing roles.

Art History
Art History majors study the visual arts, past and present, as forms of communication that are shaped by physical, cultural, political, psychological and economic contexts. Our majors are guided through a curriculum that provides historical and geographic breadth in the history of art and an introduction to studio art practice. In small, discussion-based courses our majors master the critical reading, writing and speaking skills that will prepare them to successfully navigate our media-rich world.
The Art History curriculum enhances classroom learning with experiential opportunities. We take full advantage of our proximity to New York City, a global art capital. The New York Semester on Contemporary Art is often described by our majors as a formative experience. Museums and Society, a course conducted partially at regional museums, offers another opportunity for experiential learning. Majors are also encouraged to include credit-bearing arts-related internships as part of their curriculum.

These internships and experiential learning opportunities encourage students to begin thinking about their careers and help them develop valuable skills while at Drew.
