If that sounds like you, the Writing and Communication emphasis of the English major is for you! Writing Studies includes communication, rhetoric, social media studies, journalism, literacy and language, and community writing. It is a rapidly growing field and a vibrant part of the English Major at Drew, applying the close reading and critical thinking skills of the major to a broad array of public texts and contexts. International Year One General will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Drew University.Upon successful completion of International Year One and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at Drew University or at a number of well-known US universities. This transition from an INTO program to a university degree program is called progression.

Our proximity to New York City and major media and publishing companies in New Jersey provides opportunities to intern pretty much anywhere, and our many alumni in the fields of writing and communication provide opportunities for mentorship during and beyond your years at Drew–both for those pursuing internships and for those considering graduate school. Drew’s Center for Internships and Career Development will also work with you to help you find an internship that draws on your interests and and extends your coursework.

GERMAN STUDIES majors master a language known for its intellectual and creative culture. The language itself is desired and often required for graduate level study in many fields, such as history, political science music or philosophy. Many of our students find that double-majoring in German opens doors for further education and employment. Available as a major or minor program of study.
Drew’s German Studies program offers instruction of the highest quality, emphasizes innovative learning and integrates language, literature and culture. Drew’s proximity to New York City is important because it represents one of the largest concentrations of German culture outside of Europe, and there are regular excursions to Manhattan to experience opera, classical music, art exhibitions and restaurants. On campus, the German Studies program organizes and sponsors speakers, films and concerts. Drew has a chapter of the national German honor society, Delta Phi Alpha. We strongly encourage study abroad and offer opportunities in German-speaking countries.

Engineering Physics
Drew’s engineering physics major is designed to provide an ideal pathway for students interested in a career in engineering. The core curriculum is built around the physics, mathematics, chemistry and computer science courses that form the foundational knowledge of engineering and introduce the engineering/design mindset required to solve today’s complex problems. Students pursuing engineering physics at Drew will be broadly trained with both strong technical skills and other critical transferable skills for effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Some graduates continue their engineering studies through combined degree programs with Columbia and Washington University or through other graduate programs. Others pursue careers in fields ranging from acoustical engineering to computer aided design or solid state device fabrication.

Women’s and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the diversity of women’s and men’s experiences as they are informed by gender, class, race/ethnicity, sexuality, age, ability, social location, and cultural and national identity. The program is shaped by the theoretical and methodological questions and insights of feminist thought and gender scholarship in many fields. The program offers a major and a minor. Graduates of the program have gone on to careers in law, medicine, teaching, community organizing, counseling, business, social work, and many kinds of not-for-profit organizations.

The Women’s Studies program at Drew began as a minor in the College of Liberal Arts in the mid-1970s.  The major was established in 1997, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

The Graduate Pathway in Data Analytics will prepare you to enter your next semester of a master’s degree program at Drew University. Upon successful completion of the Graduate Pathway and meeting university requirements for graduate admission, you may enter your next year of graduate study at a number of well-known US universities. Data Analytics
The digitization of information—social networks, business transactions, healthcare records and more—has transformed the world, necessitating a demand for people who understand all of the big data being collected and who can take action to help individuals, corporations and organizations become smarter, faster and ultimately more effective.

Through Drew’s Master of Science and graduate certificate programs in Data Analytics, you will:

• Learn how to obtain, prepare and manage data from a wide variety of sources.
• Gain mastery of data analytical techniques.
• Leave with a portfolio of projects and work experience from experiential learning projects and internships.
