International Year One in the Arts (5-Semester Pathway) Leading to Bachelor of Arts in Music

As English majors, students read widely, engaging with many kinds of texts from multiple periods, geographical areas, genres, and literary traditions. Within the major, students choose a specific emphasis (Literature, Creative Writing, or Writing and Communication Studies) as their focus and develop their skills and knowledge through in-depth exploration within that emphasis.  Through the major, students develop flexibility of thought, attentiveness to language, an ability to engage with the world around them, and to understand difference (gender, race, class, ability, religion, nation), capacities which they may apply in almost any area of study or employment after college.  Upon completion of the major, students will particularly demonstrate the following:

Close Reading: In their reading of a text, students demonstrate attentiveness to language, technique, structure, cultural/historical reference, and forms and genres.

Range of Approaches: Students use critical frameworks to open texts in different ways.

Historicizing: Students analyze texts in relation to the historical period and culture in which they were produced.

Writing: Students write clearly and flexibly, using writing to develop and express ideas, to construct narratives, to connect with multiple audiences, and as a tool for thinking.

Information Literacy: Students can find, evaluate, and engage with sources using disciplinary research tools.

Synthesizing: In creating their own arguments, students draw on a variety of texts, scholars, and/or theories and place them into conversation with each other.

The digitization of information—social networks, business transactions, healthcare records and more—has transformed the world, necessitating a demand for people who understand all of the big data being collected and who can take action to help individuals, corporations and organizations become smarter, faster and ultimately more effective.

Through Drew’s Master of Science and graduate certificate programs in Data Analytics, you will:

• Learn how to obtain, prepare and manage data from a wide variety of sources.
• Gain mastery of data analytical techniques.
• Leave with a portfolio of projects and work experience from experiential learning projects and internships.

International Year One General will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Drew University.Upon successful completion of International Year One and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at Drew University or at a number of well-known US universities. This transition from an INTO program to a university degree program is called progression.

Womens and Gender Studies
Women’s and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the diversity of women’s and men’s experiences as they are informed by gender, class, race/ethnicity, sexuality, age, ability, social location, and cultural and national identity. The program is shaped by the theoretical and methodological questions and insights of feminist thought and gender scholarship in many fields. The program offers a major and a minor. Graduates of the program have gone on to careers in law, medicine, teaching, community organizing, counseling, business, social work, and many kinds of not-for-profit organizations.

The Women’s Studies program at Drew began as a minor in the College of Liberal Arts in the mid-1970s.  The major was established in 1997, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017.

Physics provides much of the conceptual foundation and instrumentation fundamental to astronomy, engineering and other sciences. It has inspired the creative work of mathematicians, philosophers and social scientists. Drew’s program is designed to provide rigorous preparation for those planning careers in the field, while also serving the needs of liberal arts students interested in a variety of other careers.

Business
The Business major takes an integrated, multifaceted, interdisciplinary, and critical approach to the study and practice of business. The program emphasizes teamwork; critical analysis; and quantitative, oral, and written communication skills.  Our graduates are prepared to work across many industries in diverse contexts, including corporations, non-profits, and public organizations, in both domestic and international settings, with others from different cultures and disciplinary perspectives.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

Creative Writing is an area of concentration within Drew’s English program that provides you with an informed understanding of depth and breadth of literature written in English, while at the same time helping you to develop your writing skills and unique voice.

We prepare you with a broad and balanced program of study that emphasizes interconnections between various literary genres as well as other disciplines such as history, science, fine arts—and more.
You’ll develop your writing through reading and writing assignments, lectures, workshops, public readings by renowned writers who visit campus—as well as many opportunities to present and discuss your work with peers and professors.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
BIOCHEMISTRY & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY is the study of life at the molecular level. Drew’s abundant research opportunities strengthen your résumé as you look for graduate schools or employment in industry after graduation. Our majors intern at Merck, Johnson & Johnson and other global pharmaceutical companies. Available as a major or minor program of study.

The intersection of biology and chemistry provides an integrative focus for understanding the molecular processes of life, and students engage the material using contemporary methods of biochemical analysis and molecular biology. The curriculum consists of required courses which provides a strong background for further study in both fields and electives allow students to personalize their major and pursue their interests in either biology, chemistry, or both. A key component of the BMB program is the pursuit of at least one semester of original research, mentored by a member of the Drew faculty. These opportunities provide close collaboration between students and faculty, and often result in published manuscripts and presentations at national scientific conferences.
