Social Work-B.SW.
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students are provided a range of opportunities to develop a broad knowledge and skills base consistent with the systems and strengths perspectives. They are expected to practice using core social work values and to examine and resolve ethical dilemmas. Classroom and field experiences prepare students to be competent in the use of new technologies and in culturally sensitive, generalist social work practice.

The MA in psychology is distinguished by its emphasis on basic research and the application of research to solve practical problems in families, industry, government, and health care settings. Because of the program’s proximity to Washington D.C., students have access to many employment and continuing education opportunities in research, academia, and consulting within government, public, and private settings.

The psychology MA offers the following concentrations:

• Applied developmental psychology
• Clinical psychology
• Cognitive and behavioral neuroscience
• Human factors/applied cognition
• Industrial/organizational psychology

The industrial/organizational psychology concentration trains students in the conduct and application of psychological research in work settings. Expertise can be developed in a variety of areas, including personnel selection, training, leadership, motivation, and human performance assessment.

It is a way of looking at the world through the lens of incentives, choices, and markets to help uncover new solutions to the persistent problems in our society. This economic perspective sheds light on important issues in the areas of production, education, crime, the environment, international trade, immigration, health care, economic growth, poverty, and more. The Bachelor of Arts in Economics is designed for students with a strong interest in the liberal arts. It is appropriate for those who prefer a less quantitative degree program than the Bachelor of Science in Economics and may be especially appropriate for students planning to attend law school or graduate programs in business or public administration.

History, BA
The Bachelor of Arts in History looks at the range of human experience: how people have lived in the past, how they live and coexist in the present, and the links between the two. Students learn to interpret the past by examining a variety of original sources: newspapers, letters and diaries, literature, government records, images, films, oral interviews, and more. Majors hone their skills in collecting, interpreting, and communicating information. Majors move on to careers in government, law, and management, as well as teaching and graduate study.

The degree, an interdisciplinary program offered by the Volgenau School of Engineering, the School of Business, and the Schar School of Policy and Government, prepares professionals for the challenges of modern computerized information systems that have become increasingly complex and vulnerable to cyber-attacks, resulting in a significant number of government regulations. Consequently, those responsible for the safe, secure, and efficient operation of such systems need to grasp their technical aspects and be familiar with both the principles of management and the public policy impact of regulatory and organizational decisions.

Electrical Engineering-B.S.
Electrical engineering is a major field of modern technology and has transformed every facet of our lives. Electrical engineers are involved in research, development, design, production, and operation of a wide variety of devices and systems, including reliable, secure, and high-speed communication networks, autonomous vehicles, robots, multi-agent systems, nanoscale integrated circuits as well as sensors that are essential to the internet-of-things. Other technologies in electrical engineering include smartphones, tablets and other modern computing platforms, as well as wearable technology such as health-monitoring wristbands, biomedical systems such as prosthetic devices, and brain-machine interfaces. The electrical engineering program offers a broad variety of courses and prepares students for a diverse array of careers in the field. Hands-on design experiences and simulation are emphasized throughout the curriculum through labs and projects integrated into various courses. The program culminates in a year-long senior design project effort which provides each student with the opportunity to apply concepts to designing, innovating and building a functional hardware system in a team environment.

Finance Concentration
The volatility of today’s financial markets continues to warrant the need for highly qualified individuals in the finance field. The area of finance is diverse, encompassing concepts and techniques utilized by individuals, businesses, and government agencies in making decisions about acquiring and investing funds.

Mason’s finance degree prepares you for finance careers in corporate and public finance, investment banking, commercial banks and credit unions, mutual funds, portfolio management, venture capital, trading, personal finance banking, and federal and state government regulatory agencies.

With a finance concentration, you will learn about:

• Initial public offerings
• Stock portfolio management
• Analyzing financial statements
• Risk analysis and management
• Dividend policy
• Financial market regulation
• International diversification
• Capital budgeting
• Financial regulations

Students should develop an education plan with their advisors that lists the courses they plan to take. The plan is approved by the student's advisor. Students may include courses from other units to complement their field of specialization; they should reflect the ideas, institutions, or processes of contemporary governance.

Students who wish to begin a career in government and politics or to alter their current career path in government and politics are encouraged to take a 3-credit internship in their area of interest. Internships can be arranged through the Schar school.

Environmental and Sustainability Studies, BA
The BA in Environmental and Sustainability Studies is a joint program between the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science.

This degree provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge of three aspects of environmental and sustainability studies: people, prosperity, and planet. In addition to required core courses, students develop more in-depth knowledge in their choice of concentration. This degree prepares students for employment and graduate study in fields related to social justice, business and public policy, and environmental protection as they relate to the environment and sustainability.
