The Actuarial Program at Illinois State University is a Center for Actuarial Excellence, one of the first nine academic programs in the United States to receive that recognition in 2009, and the first one in the State of Illinois. It is one of the leading actuarial programs in the United States, offering an undergraduate Bachelor degree, and a graduate Master degree. Elementary Education
The Elementary Teacher Education program at Illinois State will prepare you for a professional educator's license to teach grades 1-6. The program is recognized as a model of standards-based and performance-based teacher education.

Geology
Geology studies how the Earth works and its history. It’s a field-based science that takes you outside the classroom and into nature. It offers plenty of variety by incorporating principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and math.

Professional geologists study earth processes like landslides, earthquakes, and rock formation. Understanding these activities is essential to sustaining life on Earth.

The Geology program at Illinois State gives you a strong foundation and awareness of these processes. Our traditional approach to teaching prepares you for graduate school or a career. Once you complete our program, you can get licensed and begin a career in the environmental, energy, and minerals industries.

The Applied Community and Economic Development (ACED) sequence is an interdisciplinary program that enables those who are passionate about social change through service to take their careers to the next level. The sequence is designed for returned Peace Corps Volunteers and students with other development experiences (e.g., AmeriCorps, nonprofit work).

Sociology
Sociology at Illinois State prepares you to change the world you live in.

Sociology studies people, organizations, and systems. In the field, this is known as social structures.

Our family, jobs, the law, economy, and government are some of the most influential social structures in our lives. Sociology helps us understand how these structures work so we can make the world better.

It examines data to get to the root cause of problems and issues, such as racism, divorce, poverty, and crime. Sociology also develops solutions that move us in a positive direction.

Being part of our program, you’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others. We’ll help you discover how you can be a major player in sparking positive change. You’ll learn about the power of social structures, how decisions get made, and how social movements gain traction. We also take a close look at cultures, diversity, and inclusion.

Our program applies academic concepts to the real world and helps you develop the crucial skills employers need.

Most of our students do not become Sociologists. Instead, you can find them doing important work in non-profits, law enforcement, business, health care, and more.

Middle Level Teacher Education
The Middle Level Teacher Education program at Illinois State prepares candidates with a unique expertise in teaching young adolescents with a focus on grades 5-8.

As a Middle Level Teacher Education student, you are required to choose two subject areas in which to focus your studies. These concentration areas are supplemented with additional courses from related disciplines. Illinois State is the only middle level program in Illinois that requires candidates to have two content areas, giving our graduates greater flexibility in pursuing teaching opportunities and encourages graduates to consider cross-curricular teaching and learning experiences for their pupils.

Middle Level Teacher Education is a vibrant, innovative program that prepares the majority of highly trained candidates for Illinois middle level schools. New candidates become part of the 60-year history of middle level education at Illinois State.

Majors selecting this sequence receive broad training in Plant Biology. This sequence is designed for students seeking jobs with industries, the government and nonprofit organizations working with plants.

The Theatre Teacher Education sequence at Illinois State University is dedicated to preparing highly qualified teachers/artists to meet the challenges of education in the secondary school system.
