Music - Music Conducting

Students pursuing the Master of Music in Conducting are given extensive podium time and are mentored by dedicated and active conducting faculty. Upon graduation students are prepared to:

• Seek their doctoral degree
• Conduct school, church or community ensembles
• Conduct at a community college or university

The curriculum includes:

• Applied conducting
• Analysis for conductors
• Research
• Practicum in conducting
• Electives chosen from courses like non-degree recitals, music technology, music history, music theory, music education, music therapy, music business, jazz studies, ensembles, and non-music courses

The Communication Studies - Interpersonal sequence focuses on communication interaction between individuals and the impact each has on the other. The program provides a grounding in the power of communication to affect outcomes and relations across a variety of settings. Often, coursework may examine relationship development in families, social settings, and work.

Typical careers include social services, human relations, interpersonal consulting, affirmative actions, sales, and counseling.

Music - New Media Composition
We hear original music content everywhere via video games, films, television shows, or online media. Students interested in creating original music composition content for new media such as these should major in New Media Composition.

Students take classes from faculty of both the School of Music and the Creative Technologies Program. They will have the opportunity to have original compositions for acoustic instruments read by large ensembles such as the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra, Illinois State University Wind Symphony, and the Illinois State University choral ensembles. In addition, they will take courses from Creative Technologies faculty on the latest technology topics in sound editing, sound design, and virtual reality programming.

New Media Composition students are able to receive readings and performances by world-class guest artists and student ensembles and work with Creative Technologies faculty on cutting edge technology projects in sound design, virtual reality environment design, and multi-media composition.

Marketing - Professional Sales
The Professional Sales sequence exposes students to the latest theories and practice in sales education, research, and the profession. Students complete three required courses in marketing and two required and three elective courses in professional sales. The program incorporates existing personal selling and sales management courses, and offers several specialized classes including: Key Account and Relationship Management, Professional Sales Planning and Analysis, and Advanced Professional Selling and Negotiation.

Biology Teacher Education
The School of Biological Sciences at Illinois State University has a longstanding tradition in training biology teachers. Students complete a rigorous program that includes professional education courses as well as laboratory-intensive biology coursework. Students will become licensed to teach all high school science courses (biology, physics, chemistry, and earth science), including AP and honors biology.

Mathematics
The Mathematics sequence in the Mathematics major first provides students with a strong foundation in Mathematics and then gives students the flexibility to explore various aspects of the discipline.

There is also the flexibility within the Mathematics major for a student to pursue a minor in a related field of study. Such a program can prepare students for jobs in industry and government as well as prepare students for graduate study in Mathematics.

Computer Science

Human Development and Family Science
The Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) major prepares students to provide educational, preventive and intervention services to individuals and families which enhance personal, family and community well-being. Students develop the skills needed to assist people of all ages achieve individual and family well-being.

The Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics sequence combines training in basic economic theory and statistical methods with specialized training in the theory, history and institutions of economic of regulation. Students develop skills in analyzing regulatory policy and in communicating the results. In addition, students may have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience as an intern with an employer in the telecommunications, electric power, or natural gas industries, or with an appropriate government agency.

Graduates are awarded a master’s degree in Applied Economics with a sequence in Electricity, Natural Gas and Telecommunications Economics. Associated with the sequence is the Institute for Regulatory Policy Studies. The institute provides a key link between Illinois State University and the telecommunications, electric power, and natural gas industries.

Students selecting this sequence will be prepared for effective and successful careers as economists, analysts and planners with firms in the natural gas, electric, and telecommunications industries. The option is also suitable for careers with governmental agencies responsible for the regulation of public utilities, consumer advocacy organizations, and firms providing consulting and ancillary services.
