Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The Master of Music in Composition prepares students to build their portfolio in preparation to pursue a Ph.D.

Entering master's students typically have an undergraduate degree in Composition and have a varied portfolio of several works for different types of ensembles or media.

 Opportunities for composition students include:

  • RED NOTE New Music Festival, a week of new music events by visiting
  • composers and ensembles from around the country
  • Exclusive reading sessions for ISU composition students during RED NOTE from nationally prominent ensembles.
  • Annual large ensemble readings with both the Illinois State University Wind Symphony and
  • the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra with the opportunity for select pieces to be chosen for performance.
  • Chamber concerts of new student works each semester.
  • Private lessons with faculty and nationally recognized guest composers.

Psychology
The major in Psychology requires a capstone experience, which provides students with challenging opportunities to apply their knowledge of psychology to research, teaching, or practice endeavors. Students can work with faculty in the classroom or their research labs, or study specific topics of the student's interest.

The Department of Psychology has also established an extensive internship program that gives students opportunities to apply their knowledge in a work setting in the local community. The Research Apprenticeship Program, Undergraduate Teaching Assistantship Program, and Internship Program are designed to give students practical experiences beyond their academic coursework.

The Applied Economics sequence is designed to train students in the quantitative and applied economic skills that will best enhance their future employment opportunities as economists, research analysts, or planners in the private and public sectors. The Applied Economics program is a STEM designated degree, which focuses on the systematic study of mathematical and statistical analysis of economic phenomena and problems. Majors selecting this sequence will receive broad training in Physiology, Neuroscience and Behavior. This sequence is designed for students seeking careers that involve basic scientific and applied aspects of behavior, physiology and neuroscience.

This sequence will also prepare students for graduate studies in neuroscience, physiology and animal behavior and related fields, and with additional coursework, students can meet the requirements to apply to veterinary and health professional schools.

Recreation and Park Administration - Recreation Management
Recreation Management professionals plan, organize, and lead experiences for people with diverse backgrounds and interests. Experiences range from sports and crafts, to camping and other special interests. They also work in a variety of settings including parks, sport facilities, community centers, retirement villages, camps, and tourism attractions.

Students in this major put theory into practice by completing two internships. There are also opportunities to attend conferences, participate in clubs, and study abroad. These experiences help students develop a professional network.

Faculty in Recreation Management have won awards for teaching, research, and service. They also conduct and publish research as well as write industry-leading textbooks.

Food, Nutrition and Dietetics - Dietetics
Illinois State's ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD program) is a 2-year program that includes extensive coursework in the sciences, social sciences, management, and specialized courses covering the broad field of food, nutrition, and dietetics. All DPD students will need to complete an undergraduate professional practice experience as a program requirement.

The Didactic Program in Dietetics provides the first step for students planning to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) by preparing graduates for the required ACEND accredited dietetic internship. Find out more about the steps to becoming an RDN.

The program culminates with students receiving a B.S. degree in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics and an ACEND Verification Statement of DPD Program Completion, which verifies that graduates have met the required Standards of Education established by ACEND, the accrediting agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This official statement is required for graduates to begin an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship after acceptance, and for other professional applications requiring verification of DPD Program completion.

Effective 1/1/2024, a master's degree will be required to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration RDN credentialing exam.

Illinois State University offers multiple master’s program pathways that will enable qualified students to meet the master’s requirement while continuing their educational path to becoming an RDN at ISU. Qualified juniors can apply to the accelerated master’s program which allows students to complete an undergraduate and master’s degree in 5 years. Accelerated dietetics master’s students have the option of being preselected to our distance internship.
