The School of Biological Sciences has both a Ph.D. program and a master's degree program in which students can perform thesis research on bioenergy-related projects.

For students interested in taking the master's degree track, the School of Biological Sciences offers an M.S. sequence in Bioenergy Sciences, which provides students with the background to conduct thesis research focusing on questions related to biological and/or environmental aspects of using/engineering plants and microbes for the production of bio-based fuels. Ultimately, students will be prepared for pursuing higher degrees or entering professions related to bioenergy.

Majoring in history lets you dive into the topics you are most excited about. Our program offers nearly 100 courses – from the Middle Ages to the American Revolution. You’ll get the opportunity to learn in small classes from a passionate faculty.

History at Illinois State offers an Accelerated Master’s Degree (AMD) sequence. This option gives high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to earn a master’s degree with only one year of additional study. Once enrolled in the major, you can contact your advisor to learn more.

Special Education - Specialist in Learning and Behavior
As the largest specialty program, the Learning and Behavior Specialist prepares students to teach in most public special education classrooms. Specialists in Learning and Behavior teach children with learning, emotional, or cognitive disabilities, orthopedic impairments, autism spectrum, multiple disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, or other health impairments.

The M.A. in Visual Culture offers graduate students the opportunity for critical study and analysis of artistic and cultural production throughout history.

As an interdisciplinary field of study, visual culture emerges out of a number of established disciplines including, but not limited to, art history, anthropology, cultural studies, history, literature, media studies, music, and theatre.

In addition to the study of canonical works of art, an M.A. in Visual Culture allows for the examination of those objects and images that have not fit into the traditional boundaries of art history. This degree program is intended to complement and take advantage of the fact that individuals in many different fields are already working within the bounds of visual culture.

Food and Nutrition Management
The Food and Nutrition Management program at llinois State covers the broad field of nutrition with a special focus on the food and beverage industry, rather than science. The program combines business and management principles with food service and hospitality skills.

The Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity program prepares students to make a positive impact on the professional practices and policies in their field. Students study psychological characteristics and their influence on sport and physical activity participation.

Chemistry Teacher Education
Illinois State's rate of teacher graduation places it among the Top 10 educators of teachers in the nation. Nearly 1 of every 7 teachers in the classrooms of Illinois' public schools holds a degree from Illinois State University. Approximately one-half of all secondary school teachers in downstate Illinois currently hold teaching degrees from Illinois State.

The demand for chemistry teachers is great in both Illinois and across the nation. We need more beginning chemistry teachers over the next 10 years than teacher education programs can currently produce. Illinois State's Chemistry Teacher Education program is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The Department of Chemistry is one of the nation's top producers of degrees certified by the American Chemical Society.

Theatre - Design/Production
Welcome to the Production Design and Technology sequence at Illinois State University's School of Theatre and Dance! This is where your talent and skills turn into magic on stage. You will create exciting theatrical environments filled with costumes, scenery, lights and sound. We in the production and design technology sequence make it happen in our shops, in the rehearsal hall, and in the classroom. You will have hands-on opportunities to practice your chosen craft and experiment with others you never dreamed of mastering. Food, Nutrition and Dietetics - Dietetics
Illinois State's ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD program) is a 2-year program that includes extensive coursework in the sciences, social sciences, management, and specialized courses covering the broad field of food, nutrition, and dietetics. All DPD students will need to complete an undergraduate professional practice experience as a program requirement.

The Didactic Program in Dietetics provides the first step for students planning to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) by preparing graduates for the required ACEND accredited dietetic internship. Find out more about the steps to becoming an RDN.

The program culminates with students receiving a B.S. degree in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics and an ACEND Verification Statement of DPD Program Completion, which verifies that graduates have met the required Standards of Education established by ACEND, the accrediting agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This official statement is required for graduates to begin an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship after acceptance, and for other professional applications requiring verification of DPD Program completion.

Effective 1/1/2024, a master's degree will be required to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration RDN credentialing exam.

Illinois State University offers multiple master’s program pathways that will enable qualified students to meet the master’s requirement while continuing their educational path to becoming an RDN at ISU. Qualified juniors can apply to the accelerated master’s program which allows students to complete an undergraduate and master’s degree in 5 years. Accelerated dietetics master’s students have the option of being preselected to our distance internship.

Family and Consumer Sciences - Teacher Education
The FCS teacher education program has a strong reputation of producing high-caliber teachers. It focuses on the fundamentals of teaching and prepares FCS teacher candidates in:

Our program meets the Illinois teacher licensure requirements. Teacher candidates can get an Illinois teacher's license in a four or two-year degree program . Graduates are qualified to teach 6th through 12th grades in all areas of FCS. Endorsement options are also available.
