Community Health and Human Services
A healthy community doesn't just happen—it takes education, coaching, program development, and, most important, people who care to make a difference. At UAB, you'll gain a full understanding of the human body and prepare for a career helping others live healthy lives.

As you begin the program, we'll sit down with you to help you determine your career goals. Based on those goals, you'll choose a concentration of either community health or human services. In community health, you'll learn about policies, programs, anatomy, and nutrition for the well-being of both individuals and communities. If you choose human services, which is offered both online and on campus, we'll cover topics such as case management, public policy, and intervention.

Medical Sociology
Medical sociology looks at how a person's culture, feelings, and other social factors play a role in their health-care choices. A medical sociology degree can help prepare you for a career in health care, research, government data analysis, or other industries.

To begin your education, you'll take courses in medical sociology, medical social theory, and research methods/statistics. You'll then move on to electives on special topics that interest you, such as Death and Dying, Biology and Society, and Minority Aging. We know, some of these topics can get a little heavy—but they're important. And when you pair them with a pre-professional medical program, you'll have insights to social behaviors that can be invaluable to you throughout your career.

Materials Engineering
The world is made out of all sorts of stuff—metals, plastic, glass, stones, almost anything you can think of—and materials engineers not only study how to make that stuff but also why we use it. As a grad, you can go on to work in aerospace, chemical, automotive, metals casting, biomedical, or microelectronics fields.

For success in this field, we believe hands-on experience is invaluable. That's why we complement your classes with labs, research, internships, and co-ops. We offer a general curriculum, or you can focus on tissue engineering and implants, metals and automotive materials, or the chemical makeup of polymers. Plus, you can enrich your experience with additional research and seminars in our honors program, or even get a certification to teach general science through the UABTeach program. Best of all, you'll have access to our state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot Materials Processing and Development (MPAD) facility.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers undergraduate students a major in materials science and engineering, covering a wide spectrum of the materials world, with concentrations in biomaterials, metallurgy, and polymer matrix composites.

Besides classroom learning, our students are trained with technical skills through laboratory classes, research experiences in laboratories led by faculty, and internships and co-ops in industry. Students develop their professional skill by active engagement with the UAB student chapters of various professional societies and participating in outreach activities. After graduation, our students either start professional careers or pursue graduate studies.

Economics
If you study economics, you'll find there's actually a science behind how and why money gets spent in a society. At UAB, we'll get you ready for a career in research, consulting, or other industry.

To get prepared, you need a solid foundation in economics and decision-sciences, and that's exactly what our program will give you. Whether you're into data-driven analysis or the philosophy of decision science, we have a concentration that's perfect for you. Choose between mathematical economics, economic analysis and policy, or philosophy, politics, and economics. You will have the opportunity to make networking connections through organizations such as the Economics Club, International Business Association, and the Business Honors Program.

The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) allows you to combine your academic interests, contribute to society in meaningful ways, and find full-time employment or compete for promotion. This major is designed for flexibility to help you achieve your goals. It emphasizes adaptability, thinking, writing, and communication skills.

The BGS helps prepare you mainly for support careers in various fields, including government, health care, real estate, general social services and the service-producing sector, law, retail, and private industry.

Students who successfully complete a Graduate Pathway program in Public Administration are assured progression to a nationally-ranked UAB graduate degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. Public Administration
If you're interested in the public sector, this is definitely a degree for you to consider. We have numerous graduates who've gone on to serve in government—one was a major party candidate in Alabama's 2018 governor race. Complete the program, and you could be next.

As you begin your education, it's best to have an idea of your career goals. Our 39-hour curriculum includes a choice between two concentrations: nonprofit management and public management and planning. With nonprofit management, we'll teach you about fundraising and development, grant management, and program evaluation. If you choose public management and planning, you'll learn about preparing and managing budgets, economic development, and community development at the federal, state, and local level. No matter which concentration you pick, however, you'll need to choose between a thesis or a non-thesis track. Best of all, we've designed the entire program to fit your professional schedule. Many classes are offered in the evening, while others are a mix of online and face-to-face instruction.

Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. With a thorough knowledge of psychology, you can offer great value in a wide variety of fields, including business, advertising, politics, law, education, and mental health counseling.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.

Public Health
The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

Physics
Students who major in physics go on to successful careers in a variety of fields that impact both big research problems and our technologically-based global economy. The UAB Department of Physics offers a rigorous but flexible undergraduate program that emphasizes both depth and breadth in order to meet the demands of tomorrow’s technology-based research and education global scenes.

In order for our students to develop the skills that employers desire and that Grand Challenge interdisciplinary research problems demand, the UAB Department of Physics offers five different undergraduate tracks designed to help students achieve their career goals not only in traditional physics, but also in closely-related engineering, STEM, teaching, computational, and medical fields.

Materials engineering is a highly diverse field with applications connected to virtually all scientific disciplines. Therefore, the Master of Science program at UAB is a viable option for students whose background includes a baccalaureate degree from other engineering fields or from any number of physical science disciplines.

Prospective students should demonstrate competence in fields of study that emphasize structure, processing, performance, and properties of materials.
