Biology is the study of all living things—from molecules to entire ecosystems. And when you study all those things, you can do almost anything. Our alumni work in genetics, microbiology, spinal cord injury, brain development, and education, as well as in wildlife and nature conservation.

In our biology program, you'll have an amazing experience. For one, you'll be taught by our world-renowned faculty and scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories. You can even do fieldwork at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on Alabama's Gulf Coast or in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, or Antarctica. Once you've completed your program track—Integrated Biology, Marine Science, or Molecular Biology—you'll have the prerequisites you need for medical, dental, optometry, or pharmacy school.  You can even get certified to teach biology or general science through the UABTeach program.

The UAB MBA program is decision-oriented, focusing on key aspects of modern administration, and it seeks to prepare graduates for leadership roles in business, industry, government, or social services. In order to deal effectively with increasingly complex problems of organizations, managers require training in sophisticated analytical techniques, an appreciation for the behavioral facets of management, and an ability to anticipate and adapt to changes in the organizational environment.

Sociology
Sociology is the scientific study of human behavior. If you want to understand social behavior in the real world, sociology is where you find the answers. From large-scale social processes occurring in the wider society beyond the individual to the dynamics of social interaction within small groups, sociology investigates the complexities of human social relationships. Regardless of your chosen career path, having a critical understanding of the social world will put you at the forefront of your career field!

Graduates of sociology have gone on to careers in administration and management (in government, private business, and nonprofit organizations), marketing, sales, politics, communications, social services (youth, senior, and poverty), corrections/investigation (local, state, and federal), and public relations, just to name a few. In addition, a degree in sociology can help prepare you for many professional degree programs when paired with one of the pre-professional programs at UAB. Sociology graduates have gone on to law, business, and medical school.

Philosophy
As a philosophy student, you won't just study ideas and thoughts related to these questions, you'll study critical thinking, problem solving, and how to analyze and argue. We want this foundation to help you excel in fields such as medicine, law, journalism, politics, business, and more.

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs. If you choose the ethics concentration, your coursework will concentrate on ethical issues and social issues.

High School Education
As a high-school teacher, you can have a tremendous influence over a person during some of their most formative years. In fact, what you teach someone can last a lifetime. At UAB, we can teach you the skills needed to become a high school educator.

To get started, you must first decide what subject you want to teach: science, social studies, math, or English language arts. Then, you'll learn critical skills, competencies, and instructional strategies from our nationally-renowned faculty. We'll also give you hands-on experience through internships and practicums. Finally, if you're a future math or science teacher, you may want to enroll in UABTeach, our four-year program that lets you earn a STEM degree while also qualifying for certification as a classroom teacher.

Students joining our Integrated Master Program (IMP) will benefit from a degree-seeking I-20 while still receiving the additional support provided by INTO UAB, from the day they apply through their first semester on campus. The Master of Science in Cyber Security (formerly known as Computer Forensics and Security Management) (MSSec) is an interdisciplinary program that prepares graduates for a professional career in the field of cyber security by developing in them the necessary skills crucial for success. The program also provides current practitioners the opportunity to obtain advanced-level training to facilitate career advancement. The program includes a set of core, required courses and the opportunity to select from a default option or two tracks of specialization.

English
Have you ever wondered how you can harness your reading, writing, and language skills into a lucrative career? With an English degree from UAB, you can learn how powerful expression and communication can be in the worlds of media, law, medicine, and many more.

In fact, practically every job you can imagine depends on communication. That's why our program is so diverse. You can choose to learn the science behind the English language, study the greatest authors of all time, hone your creative writing skills, or prepare to write in a professional setting. You'll also have the opportunity to write for a student publication, complete a capstone project, work as an intern, or research for a thesis in the English honors program.

In political science, we teach you how American government and politics compare with the rest of the world. This major is an excellent option if your career interests are either political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy, political research, foreign diplomacy, law, journalism, or education.

To get you started, we'll give you an overview of American government, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and data and policy. Then, your advisor will help you choose between a line of study that's focused on the United States and one that's more internationally centered. At that point, you'll be able to tailor your curriculum with your goals in mind, search for appropriate internships, and even potentially get one-on-one faculty mentoring through the honors program.

Students who successfully complete a Graduate Pathway program in cyber security are assured progression to a UAB graduate degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. Cyber Security
The Master of Science in Cyber-Security (MSSec) program is an interdisciplinary professional/practice graduate program intended to develop skills — familiarity with industry practices, innovative methods, critical thinking, and problem solving — crucial for competitiveness and success in the areas of computer forensics, information security management, and forensic accounting.
This program is intended to increase the pipeline of prospective, high-quality, entry- and advanced level employees involved with protecting physical and virtual systems — systems that are vital to the US and whose incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on national security and the nation’s economic system. The program also provides current employees in the public and private sectors an opportunity to obtain advanced-level, high-quality training in the core areas of computer forensics, information security management, and forensic accounting, to facilitate career advancement.

MS Cyber-Security involves faculty from the Departments of Computer Science and Criminal Justice (College of Arts and Sciences) and the Departments of Management, Information Systems Quantitative Methods, and Accounting & Finance (School of Business).

Biotechnology is responsible for a lot—from beer, cheese, and bread to biofuels and many other modern breakthroughs. At UAB, we can teach you the fundamentals of biotechnology and how to develop and launch new products and technology.

As a matter of fact, one of our most important goals is to help you make your ideas a reality. To do this, we'll enroll you in classes that are divided into categories such as principles of biotechnology, applications in biotechnology, bench to commercialization, and professional skills. But that's just the beginning. We believe real-world experience is critical, and you're going to get plenty of it. There'll be guest speakers who have discovered innovative technologies and created new products. Plus, we're going to put you to work with actual biotech companies so you can help develop real solutions.
