Economics
If you study economics, you'll find there's actually a science behind how and why money gets spent in a society. At UAB, we'll get you ready for a career in research, consulting, or other industry.

To get prepared, you need a solid foundation in economics and decision-sciences, and that's exactly what our program will give you. Whether you're into data-driven analysis or the philosophy of decision science, we have a concentration that's perfect for you. Choose between mathematical economics, economic analysis and policy, or philosophy, politics, and economics. You will have the opportunity to make networking connections through organizations such as the Economics Club, International Business Association, and the Business Honors Program.

We are looking for students ready to accept a challenge. Our goal is to give students the background to use mathematics in a variety of ways through training in mathematical rigor. This can enhance your ability to analyze and solve problems in all walks of life. We also emphasize the development of communication skills, something useful in the classroom and the workplace.
You have a solid grasp of the science of numbers, but now you want a more theoretical and abstract understanding of math. In this program, we can give you the problem-solving skills you need for a career in business, government, teaching, or another profession.

As a matter of fact, chances are your job will require knowledge from at least one of our core courses: algebra, analysis, geometry, numerical analysis, probability/statistics, and topology. If you're an undergrad, you may want to take a look at our accelerated master's option. After that, you and your faculty advisor can sit down together, review your career goals, and decide which specialty is better for you. You'll have two options. If you want to pursue an advanced degree, such as a PhD, you'll probably want to choose Plan I (thesis option). With this plan you'll complete both your required coursework and a thesis based on original research. Plan II (non-thesis option) is great for enriching your current career or starting one upon graduation.

Political Science
In political science, we teach you how American government and politics compare with the rest of the world. This major is an excellent option if your career interests are either political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy, political research, foreign diplomacy, law, journalism, or education.

To get you started, we'll give you an overview of American government, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and data and policy. Then, your advisor will help you choose between a line of study that's focused on the United States and one that's more internationally centered. At that point, you'll be able to tailor your curriculum with your goals in mind, search for appropriate internships, and even potentially get one-on-one faculty mentoring through the honors program.

Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. By understanding this universal language, you'll have problem-solving abilities that are useful in business, engineering, medicine, technology, and a seemingly infinite number of other fields.

In fact, many mathematics grads go on to work at NASA, Bell Labs, and even the National Security Agency. But to get there, you have to start here, with subjects like differential equations, advanced calculus, and mathematical modeling. If you're looking to further your education, consider our mathematics accelerated master's program, where you can complete both your bachelor's and master's in only four years. The UAB MBA program is decision-oriented, focusing on key aspects of modern administration, and it seeks to prepare graduates for leadership roles in business, industry, government, or social services. In order to deal effectively with increasingly complex problems of organizations, managers require training in sophisticated analytical techniques, an appreciation for the behavioral facets of management, and an ability to anticipate and adapt to changes in the organizational environment.

In finance, we'll teach you how to address an age-old problem: How do you make more money and grow your business? With your BS, we'll train you to add value to all sorts of businesses, including multinational banks, investment firms, and other companies in every industry.

But before you can build that wealth, you need the educational foundation required to fuel your success. That's why our program begins with an exploration of financial planning, investing, valuation, risk management and more. After your core courses, we'll help you choose a track that best fits your career goals. Not to mention, our award-winning, student-managed investment fund, the UAB Green and Gold Fund, will give you real-world experience. Best of all, everything's available both on campus and online.

Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the body's nervous system—or in other words, how the brain shares information throughout the body. A degree in this program can help you prepare for a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology, or most health-related fields.

Because this program is a partnership between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, you'll have a diverse course offering that includes biology, chemistry, math, physics, psychology, and neurobiology. Furthermore, this program satisfies most prerequisite course requirements for those looking to go on to medical school or to pursue another career in health care. Finally, you'll have an opportunity to earn a general science teaching certification through UABTeach and have a chance to collaborate and research with a faculty member on campus.

Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to biology and medicine. BME knowledge and skills play important roles in modern healthcare — from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and from the proliferation of implantable medical devices (such as pacemakers and artificial hips) to more futuristic technologies (such as stem cell engineering and 3D printing of biological organs).

Biomedical engineers differ from other engineering disciplines that have an influence on human health. How? Biomedical engineers use and apply an intimate knowledge of modern biological principles in their engineering design process. Subdisciplines in BME include design and development of active and passive medical devices, orthopedic implants, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, tissue and stem cell engineering, and clinical engineering, just to name a few.

If you're interested in careers in research science, scientific policy, science communication, science education, biomedical sales, and more, the Master of Science in Multidisciplinary Biomedical Science (MBS) might be for you. This program is intended for domestic and international students that have some undergraduate STEM field training and wish to increase their knowledge of biomedical sciences.

The following is the curriculum for the MS in Biomedical and Health Sciences program. Because of the partnership between the School of Health Professions’ Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences department and the Heersink School of Medicine’s Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology department, the curriculum is organ-based and modeled after the first two years of the curriculum at the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UABSOM).
