A healthy community doesn't just happen—it takes education, coaching, program development, and, most important, people who care to make a difference. At UAB, you'll gain a full understanding of the human body and prepare for a career helping others live healthy lives.

As you begin the program, we'll sit down with you to help you determine your career goals. Based on those goals, you'll choose a concentration of either community health or human services. In community health, you'll learn about policies, programs, anatomy, and nutrition for the well-being of both individuals and communities. If you choose human services, which is offered both online and on campus, we'll cover topics such as case management, public policy, and intervention.

Art
Do you have a burning desire to express yourself through a variety of art media? Create art that transforms the world around you through a career in art direction, graphic design, museum curation, art conservation — or just about any other profession you can imagine.

From the moment you set foot on campus, we'll immerse you in the arts. Your coursework will teach you multiple disciplines of fine arts and design, and your access to UAB's Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and the Birmingham Museum of Art will give you an intimate exposure to exhibits, displays, and special events. Choose an art studio concentration, and we'll encourage you to experiment with various styles. Concentrate in art history, and you'll focus on visual literacy and critical thinking.

The Master of Arts degree in Art History offered jointly with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, is the only art history graduate program in the state. The M.A. degree in Art History prepares students for further academic study at the doctoral level or for professional careers in teaching, museums, galleries, and other arts-related fields. Students may enroll on either campus and must take at least 6 hours of course work on the other campus.

The M.A. program offers a wide range of art history courses and graduate seminars. Each student must take ARH 680 (Methods and Approaches to the History of Art). The M.A. program offers specialized study in Medieval Art, Early Modern Art, Eighteenth-Century/Nineteenth-Century Art, Twentieth-Century/Contemporary Art, South Asian Art, and East Asian Art. The small size of the program affords graduate students the opportunity to work closely with individual faculty members on both campuses in seminars and directed research projects. The M.A. in Art History provides students with a thorough grounding in art history, critical thinking, and research methods.

Music
With a music degree, you can learn more than how to make a beautiful, artistic sound—you can learn all about music technology, composition, theory, and more. With your passion and degree, you can pursue jobs in music production, teaching, or performing.

To start on the right note, you will need to determine your music career goal. In addition to your regular coursework, we'll encourage you to audition for various student performances. We have many ensembles and other performance opportunities for you to choose from. If you concentrate on music technology, we'll ask you to do an internship. If you focus on music education, we'll want you to complete the necessary requirements to teach K-12. Either way, your advisor will be there to help you every step of the way.

Clinical labs need people like you to run tests and analyze data in order to give patients accurate diagnoses. We can prepare you for a career working in a hospital lab, industry, research lab, or elsewhere.

To earn the MS in Clinical Laboratory Science, you'll complete a rigorous curriculum that includes a set of rich, diverse learning experiences under faculty that are committed to your success. The comprehensive program includes courses such as Body Fluids, Laboratory Techniques, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Microbiology, among others. To give you a valuable, hands-on experience, you'll have lab offerings with most of your courses. In addition, you'll take professional-development classes that'll help you adapt with this evolving field. Finally, you'll have opportunities to work at Birmingham-area clinics, giving you crucial, real-world experience on your resume by the time you graduate.

Accounting is the language of business.  Communicating relevant financial accounting information and providing reliable financial reports is an essential component of successful business endeavors across the globe.  Because their extensive knowledge of business activities, accountants have the flexibility and knowledge for branding out into management and entrepreneurial roles.  UAB's Accounting Program offers a high-quality, practice-oriented educational experience designed for aspiring accountants seeking an innovative, technology driven learning environment.

A bachelor’s level education in accounting can lead to a wide variety of career choices in business, finance, insurance, investing, tax or auditing. It also paves the way to a master’s degree and future opportunities in financial management. Accounting graduates are hired by accounting firms, banks, private companies, non-profit organizations, insurance companies, government agencies, and corporations.

Marketing
A marketing degree can give you the skills and knowledge necessary to be able to work in nearly any industry that exist today, particularly because marketing is such an important part of any business plan and involves understanding the importance of consumer relations, communication, and the various stakeholders involved. Marketing requires excellent analytical and communication skills.

A marketing degree can lead to a steady career path in sales or marketing management, public relations, fundraising, advertising, or promotions. Marketing graduates are hired by ad agencies and marketing firms of all sizes, as well as by business in virtually every industry sector.

If you're interested in learning how peace can make a difference in individuals, families, communities, and nations, consider earning an MA in Anthropology of Peace and Human Rights. Our graduates go on to careers in law, teaching, public service, international affairs, business, and journalism.

At UAB, we've never been more focused on peace, justice, human rights, and ecology than we are right now. It's why we established the UAB Institute for Human Rights. It's also why, in 2017, we established this program. It's a two-year master's program with coursework in social and cultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology. As a student, you'll work with your advisor to choose one of two plans necessary to complete your degree. With Plan 1 (thesis), you'll take five elective courses (15 semester hours) and enroll in six semester hours of thesis credit. If your goal is to earn your PhD, this is the better option for you. With Plan 2 (non-thesis option), you'll take seven elective courses (21 semester hours), and we'll require you to pass a comprehensive final exam before graduation.

As a criminal justice student, you'll not only learn about crime and justice—you'll also gain critical skills in analyzing and communicating. In fact, with your degree, you can pursue careers in law enforcement – including cyber crime investigation – and social services, business, and education.

We’ll train you in the areas of corrections, criminology, forensic science, juvenile justice, law, policing, computer forensics, and other positions. Your courses will teach you the theories of crime and delinquency, as well as the logic, procedures, and ethical foundations associated with our nation's justice system. Finally, during your senior year, we'll set you up with an internship at an agency such as the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, or the Jefferson County Family Court.

As a foreign languages student, not only will you learn another language, you'll also gain a deeper understanding of culture, art, history, and philosophy. These will be critically important skills for you in fields like journalism, medicine, tourism, government, social work, and more.

To succeed in these careers, you absolutely must know how to communicate effectively in local, national, and global communities alike. That's why we offer you traditional language, culture, civilization, linguistics, and literature classes. But that's just the beginning. You can also take courses such as Literature in Translation, Film and Cultural Studies, Foreign Media and Society, U.S. Latino Topics, Applied Linguistics, and Languages for the Professions. With internships and opportunities to study abroad, you can expand your worldview even further.
