The Major provides the experience and knowledge to understand and appreciate prior accomplishments in the discipline and develop the skills necessary for a meaningful contribution to the intellectual advancement and applications of the discipline.   It prepares its graduates to pursue long-term careers in their field by providing solid and cutting-edge knowledge, as well as a technical education enabling them to take on leading positions in a modern economy.

This master’s program can be done either fully online or in a hybrid (combination face-to-face and online) manner. It will consist of two tracks. The applied track will prepare students for the newly emerging and rapidly changing field of digital journalism, which brings new technologies and evolving value to bear on the report of global news and events. The academic track will prepare students in both emerging digital news and communication technologies while adding an academic dimension for those wishing to continue their studies or pursue a Ph.D. in Mass Communications or other related field.

Civil Engineering
Civil engineers will be entrusted by society to create a sustainable world and enhance the global quality of life. Civil engineers will serve as master planners, designers, constructors, and operators of society’s economic and social engine, the built environment (i.e., infrastructure); innovators and integrators of ideas and technology across the public, private, and academic sectors; managers of risk and uncertainty caused by natural events, accidents, and other threats; stewards of the natural environment and its resources; and, leaders in discussions and decisions shaping public environmental and infrastructure policy.

This degree prepares our majors to go on to graduate school, medical school, law school, or choose to enter the workforce in a wide variety of public, private, governmental, and non-profit agencies. Faculty in the department collaborate with an extensive group of disciplines, providing students across campus with a site for interdisciplinary learning and teaching. Given the intensity and rigor of study, including analytical reading and critical writing, our majors make themselves extremely attractive to potential employers

Accounting
The objective of the baccalaureate degree program in Accountancy is to provide students with accounting and business knowledge that will serve as a basis for careers in industry, government, non-profit organizations and public accountancy. The baccalaureate program also prepares students for entry into the Master of Accountancy (M.Acc.) professional degree program. The State of Florida requires completion of 120 semester hours to sit for the CPA examination and 150 semester hours are required for licensure.

History
The discipline of History embraces a diverse world of ideas, peoples, and events. Our faculty seek to inform and to question, to provoke and to challenge our students to a higher level of understanding of the past. History at the University of South Florida (USF) offers the student an opportunity to explore civilizations from around the globe and from the ancient through contemporary eras. Students are encouraged to move beyond traditional memorization of material to a critical level of thinking, analysis, and synthesis. Accomplished History majors are attractive to all kinds of employers in any number of fields, as well as to graduate and professional schools. USF History alumni may be found in such diverse professions as law, medicine, business, government, foreign-service, politics, and education.

Economics offers a clear and logical way of thinking about complicated issues such as unemployment, inflation, pollution, and crime. The Department of Economics offers broad course choices allowing students to tailor their programs to provide training for professional careers in business, teaching, government, and law. Linguistics is primarily an upper-level and graduate discipline with strong interdisciplinary concerns. The Department of World Languages currently offers a Master of Arts in Linguistics: English as a Second Language. At USF, our Linguistics and TESL majors are among the oldest in the Sunshine State. Linguistics dates back to the early 1960s, early in USF history, and the applied linguistics major has prepared ESL/ESOL/EFL educators since the 1970s. Our students are prepared for positions teaching second languages to non-native speakers, and our alumni have taught in public and private institutes, here in the Tampa Bay area and around the world. Other graduates have continued their graduate education and earned doctoral degrees, and many of our alumni hold positions of leadership. In short, our graduates have made a name for the linguistics major at USF.

Computer Engineering-M.S.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers both a thesis and non-thesis option for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Engineering (M.S.C.P.). The thesis option requires students to pursue a more concentrated range of topics, while the non-thesis option allows students to explore various areas of computer engineering. There is considerable freedom in the choice of the courses.

The breadth of subjects that comprise computer engineering together with the immense diversity of its applications, make it imperative that students in the Master’s major maintain close contact with the Graduate Director, or, if choosing the thesis option, with their major professor to achieve a coherent plan of study directed towards a specific goal. In particular, selection of courses should only be made with prior consultation and approval of the major professor or the Graduate Director.
