The study of history aims at the understanding and disciplined reconstruction of past human activities, institutions, ideas, and aspirations in the light of present knowledge and in the hope of usefulness for the future. History belongs both to the humanities and to the social sciences. It is studied both for its own sake and for the light it throws on the present problems and future prospects of particular societies and of humankind in general.

A major in history in combination with work in foreign languages, philosophy, literature, and the social sciences provides a broad foundation for informed citizenship. History majors find employment in many fields of human endeavor from arts and business to public service and education. Specialization in history is especially valuable as pre-professional training for law, government, diplomacy, and journalism and for library, archival, and museum administration.

The undergraduate program of study is designed with sufficient breadth and depth to enable our graduates to work successfully in industry or government, or to continue studies in graduate school.

The electrical engineering curriculum provides a firm foundation in fundamentals, while also giving students exposure to current technologies for design and implementation. It strives for a balance between theory, laboratory and design experience. In the first two years of study, students are given a broad foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, applied mechanics, communication skills and humanities. Introductory courses in computer science and electric circuit analysis are also taken in the sophomore year. In the final two years, students build upon their earlier course work, taking a set of required EE courses intended to provide the core knowledge expected of every electrical engineer.

A student in consultation with his or her advisor chooses a number of electrical engineering professional elective courses, and various elective courses in the humanities and social sciences. The professional elective courses taken give the student expertise in an area of specialization in electrical engineering, or allow him or her to explore topics of individual interest. Areas of specialization in electrical engineering include: biomedical engineering, electronic circuits and instrumentation, microelectronics, systems, and telecommunications. The UConn School of Business Center for Real Estate is a top program for real estate research and is regularly ranked among the top 10 real estate programs in the U.S. Its impressive academic credentials are matched by a strong emphasis on real-world problem solving, and our activities embrace many disciplines including finance, statistics, economics and geography. The Center for Real Estate offers scholarship opportunities, resume book and job opportunities, and industry and student networking through the Real Estate Society field trips. The Center functions as an academic partner to the real estate industry. Many UConn Real Estate students begin their professional careers as interns, placed with the Center's assistance. Real estate professionals and alumni support the Center by sponsoring events and providing scholarships. Firms recruit graduating students for positions in real estate acquisitions, analysis, appraisal, development, dispositions, investment, research, and valuation.

Students majoring in Pathobiology focus on animal health and diseases and their relationship to people and the environment. Students can prepare to enter veterinary medical schools or medical schools. Pathobiology majors also pursue careers in biotechnology, biomedical sciences, para-veterinary medicine, and many diverse laboratory and research positions in health fields, and agriculture and natural resources.

The Management major is focused on the development of the necessary skills to lead others, work well in teams, think entrepreneurially, and develop a strategic vision. Most of the complex problems we face in the business world today, whether they impact business or society at large, require the coordination of individuals, teams, and organizations to arrive at a solution. In management we strive to have our students ready to solve today’s and tomorrow’s complex business problems.

The Department of Management offers two core courses; managerial and interpersonal behaviors (MGMT 3101) and strategic management (MGMT 4900) along with elective courses in international business, entrepreneurship, management consulting, venture consulting, negotiations, managing a diverse workforce, and managing human capital. Students may follow the entrepreneurship concentration curriculum, or choose to pursue an area of emphasis in managing consulting, human capital management, or international business.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. The Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Classical Languages (Ancient Greek, Latin, and Biblical Hebrew) and selected critical languages. Students may major in Chinese Studies, Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, Judaic Studies, and Spanish Studies. A student may double major in two of the above majors. Students will gain knowledge of the Literature, Culture, and applied Language skills that are required for teaching, business, diplomatic or governmental work, and research in graduate or undergraduate study of the culture and literature that is associated with these languages.

Education Abroad is required (or strongly encouraged, please see descriptions) for the majors in modern languages for at least one semester or approved equivalents. The department sponsors University of Connecticut programs in France; Italy; Spain; Germany; and Tianjin, China. Many other programs are available in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe through Education Abroad. Such coursework is normally most valuable during the junior year, but qualified sophomores and seniors are also eligible Students interested in Education Abroad should consult with their advisors.

The UConn Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers two major degrees that are  accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Accreditation is a process to assure you that the Civil or Environmental Engineering degree you earn at UConn can be trusted to prepare you for your career objectives, including gaining employment as an engineer after graduating and eventually becoming licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).

The Bachelor of Arts in Music with no emphasis is ideal for students looking for comprehensive study in music and is well suited to students looking to pursue a dual degree. While still requiring intensive study in music history, theory and aural skills, applied lessons, and ensemble work, this degree offering allows for a more flexible schedule. The Bachelor of Arts in Music thoroughly prepares students wishing to pursue graduate degrees in music, as well.

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in music has undergone a significant curricular revision that allows students to pursue their desire to study music and at the same time pursue other academic interests, including majors or minors in other departments and programs within the University.

The Department of Psychological Sciences recommends that its majors take a broad selection of Psychological Science courses and electives to obtain a well-rounded introduction to the science. The Department encourages students to participate in its research activities, including laboratory courses, research seminars, and independent study experiences.

A maximum of seven 2000-level or above transfer credits in psychology may count toward the major upon approval of the transfer coordinator in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Up to three credits of PSYC 3889 or 3899 can be used, and PSYC 3880 cannot be used.
