Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

The UConn Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers two major degrees that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
Accreditation is a process to assure you that the Civil or Environmental Engineering degree you earn at UConn can be trusted to prepare you for your career objectives, including gaining employment as an engineer after graduating and eventually becoming licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).

The Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance is ideal for students interested in pursuing an intensive, conservatory-like undergraduate career in performance. In addition to advanced applied study, this program provides foundational study in music theory, history, instrumental pedagogy, and conducting, among other areas. With the Bachelor of Music degree comes frequent opportunities to perform, including but not limited to: required half and whole degree recitals, solo performances in convocation, performance in master classes, ensemble performances, and chamber music.

Bachelor of Science Engineering in Electrical Engineering (STEM)
The undergraduate program of study is designed with sufficient breadth and depth to enable our graduates to work successfully in industry or government, or to continue studies in graduate school.
The electrical engineering curriculum provides a firm foundation in fundamentals, while also giving students exposure to current technologies for design and implementation. It strives for a balance between theory, laboratory and design experience. In the first two years of study, students are given a broad foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, applied mechanics, communication skills and humanities. Introductory courses in computer science and electric circuit analysis are also taken in the sophomore year. In the final two years, students build upon their earlier course work, taking a set of required EE courses intended to provide the core knowledge expected of every electrical engineer.
A student in consultation with his or her advisor chooses a number of electrical engineering professional elective courses, and various elective courses in the humanities and social sciences. The professional elective courses taken give the student expertise in an area of specialization in electrical engineering, or allow him or her to explore topics of individual interest. Areas of specialization in electrical engineering include: biomedical engineering, electronic circuits and instrumentation, microelectronics, systems, and telecommunications. Bachelor of Arts in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (STEM)
Students majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology may opt for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor of Science degree. Both B.A. and B.S. degree candidates must complete the following courses in addition to the general CLAS requirements for these degrees: BIOL 1107 and BIOL 1108 or 1110; and CHEM 1127Q and 1128Q; or CHEM 1124Q, 1125Q, and 1126Q.

Programs in the Department of Chemistry may lead to either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree. In addition, the American Chemical Society (ACS) certifies two more rigorous Bachelor of Science options.
The B.A. degree is appropriate for students who are interested in chemistry but do not wish to pursue a career as a laboratory scientist. The B.S. degrees prepare students to pursue graduate study in Chemistry or to find employment in technologically oriented industries.

The major in Environmental Sciences is based in the physical and biological sciences, but also includes course work in selected areas of the social sciences. The major leads to a Bachelor of Science degree, and may be adopted by students in either the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This curriculum offers a comprehensive approach to the study of environmental problems, including not only a rigorous scientific background, but also detailed analyses of the social and economic implications of environmental issues. The complexity and interdisciplinary nature of environmental science is reflected in the core requirements of the major. These courses, assembled from several different academic departments representing two colleges, provide both breadth and depth, preparing students for careers that deal with environmental issues and for graduate study in environmental sciences and related fields.

Bachelor of Science Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering (STEM)
The BSE-MSE Curriculum requires a minimum of 129 credits to satisfy graduation requirements. Thirty-one (31) credits in mathematics and basic sciences, fifty-five (55) credits in engineering, and nineteen to twenty-two (19-22) credits in general education courses are specified. The student will elect a minimum of twelve (12) credits from a list of recommended professional electives (Note A) and a minimum of nine (9) credits from a list of recommended technical electives (Note B). At least three credits of technical elective courses must be in mathematics or basic sciences.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering - Mechanical Engineering (STEM)
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) curriculum is designed to give sound knowledge of basic principles in mathematics, physics, and chemistry; to provide education in the theory, principles, and practices of engineering; and to present the opportunity to obtain additional instruction and experience in one of the major engineering disciplines. Students gain hands-on experience in the laboratory courses that accompany classroom work, and develop design skills in course work beginning in the first two years. Design experience continues in junior and senior years in both the thermal-fluids and mechanical systems stems of the program, culminating in the two semester Senior Design Project courses.
