In the graduate program for Plant Pathology at Montana State, candidates investigate major problems in plant pathology within MSU’s state of the art agricultural facilities. Sample research projects include, but are not limited to, soil-borne diseases in cereals, the genetic root of disease resistance in field crops, cereal leaf spots, viral diseases inherent in cereals and potatoes, bacterial diseases in plants, and the biochemistry and molecular genetics of general plant diseases. Not only does this research apply to making a healthier and more robust food supply, but the research also seeks to develop new technology to manage crop pests.

Students within the Photography option at Montana State focus on fine art and commercial approaches to the medium. As students master both analog and digital photography techniques in the studio, they also explore photography as a medium of expression under the close guidance of award-winning faculty mentors with a breadth of experience in the gallery and publication worlds. Coursework ranges from traditional silver-based darkroom techniques to alternative analog processes, as well as an emphasis on digital photographic processes.

Housed within the Department of Plant Sciences & Plant Pathology, the Landscape Design option at Montana State prepares students to solve aesthetic and functional landscape problems. Emphasis is placed on utilization of plant materials to solve specific site problems and students learn written, oral and graphic communication skills necessary to convey creative solutions for landscape planning. Graduates are employed by landscape nurseries, landscape contractors and planning agencies, while others become self-employed as landscape designers and contractors. Many students have chosen to continue advanced studies in programs of landscape architecture.

An understanding of developmental biology, cellular biology, neurobiology and physiology are important foundations for careers in the medical and dental fields. Students studying the Cell Biology and Neuroscience option at Montana State gain an understanding in a wide range of biological subjects with real-world, hands-on research experiences and mentorship opportunities with award-winning faculty. For students interested in furthering their education in the health sciences, the Health Professions Advising office facilitates exciting opportunities to explore these careers, as well as resources for applying to professional schools after graduation.

Montana State’s American Studies graduate program allows master’s and doctoral students to delve into the history and culture of the United States with a special focus on the American West. Candidates can choose to study fields such as American Arts, American History, American Literature, American Pluralism or Public History. MSU’s unique Rocky Mountain setting provides candidates with pioneering research opportunities at such sites as the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Yellowstone National Park and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming.

Electrical engineering graduates are key contributors at the frontier of science and engineering, using physics, electronics and electromagnetism to work with everything from nanotechnology to smart grids, inside human bodies to deep outer space. The Montana State electrical engineering program emphasizes hands-on laboratory work from EELE 101 through graduation. Students in the Statistics program at Montana State are trained in the core principles of quantitative reasoning. By discovering patterns in data, how to display data, how to construct mathematical models and how to detect data bias and other uncertainties, Statistics students are able to then design and analyze observational studies, surveys and scientific experiments that contribute to understanding data across a wide variety of industries.

In the Science, the Environment, Technology & Society (SETS) program at Montana State, students study history through the lens of science, technology and the environment within broader cultural contexts, such as intellectual and social history, environmental history, religious studies or philosophy. SETS students choose one of several specialties as a focus for their coursework, including Philosophy of Science, History of Science and Technology, Science and Technology Policy or Environmental History.

In the Hispanic Studies program at Montana State, students are able to explore a full range of courses on Spanish language, Hispanic culture and literature.
