Students in the Exercise Science option at Montana State focus on clinical and performance-based understandings of human movement throughout their studies. Core courses in the Exercise Science program range from anatomy and physiology to math and statistics, as well as biomechanics, nutrition and physiology. Students also have opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences such as internships and research opportunities. Graduates of the Exercise Science option go onto careers in corporate wellness programs, exercise rehab programs or graduate programs that relate to physical or occupational therapy.

Housed within the Department of Plant Sciences & Plant Pathology, the Landscape Design option at Montana State prepares students to solve aesthetic and functional landscape problems. Emphasis is placed on utilization of plant materials to solve specific site problems and students learn written, oral and graphic communication skills necessary to convey creative solutions for landscape planning. Graduates are employed by landscape nurseries, landscape contractors and planning agencies, while others become self-employed as landscape designers and contractors. Many students have chosen to continue advanced studies in programs of landscape architecture.

Candidates within the Earth Sciences graduate program at Montana State are encouraged to dive into independent thesis research across a variety of specializations within the fields of geography and geology. Faculty and advisor expertise spans many subfields of the discipline, including settlement geography, bioclimatology, GIS, planning, snow science, volcanology, paleobiology, dinosaur taphonomy, stratigraphy and geomorphology. Recent M.S. students have produced groundbreaking research and have expanded our knowledge of issues from GIS-based assessment of landslide hazards to exotic species assessment in Grand Teton National Park.

Students in the English Writing program at Montana State are expected to become skilled readers and writers through the study of language and literature. This option is also ideal for students who wish to double-major both in writing and another academic field. The study of literature and effective writing is useful in the areas of publishing, journalism, creative media and many other fields as various industries continue to seek people who are exceptionally literate and articulate.

Students in the Chemical Engineering major are constantly engaged in hands-on lab opportunities to explore the mechanics of chemical synthesis that are at the core of their profession. Whether it’s studying biofilms with a professor at the top of their field or earning a spot alongside students from across the country in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program, Chemical Engineering students are afforded a variety of opportunities to develop skills that will serve them in positions in chemical manufacturing and petroleum refining, pharmaceutical manufacturing and delivery, environmental engineering and more.

Electrical engineering graduates are key contributors at the frontier of science and engineering, using physics, electronics and electromagnetism to work with everything from nanotechnology to smart grids, inside human bodies to deep outer space. The Montana State electrical engineering program emphasizes hands-on laboratory work from EELE 101 through graduation. Electrical engineering students have access to state-of-the-art equipment and software, including electrical systems, advanced digital design, communications, control systems and even a fully functional microfabrication clean room facility. Needless to say, Montana State electrical engineering graduates have a great reputation for confidence and effectiveness in engineering design, analysis and troubleshooting.

Candidates in the Physics graduate program at Montana State conduct a wide variety of research projects from solar physics to superconductivity with MSU’s state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment. The program prides itself on collaborative research, whether it’s interdisciplinary teams on the MSU campus or working with national and international experts. In addition to the groundbreaking research conducted in the department, Physics candidates have the opportunity to conduct public outreach and educational research through the MSU Physics Education Research (PER) group.

Building on an existing foundation of knowledge, students within the Master of Professional Accountancy Program (MPAc) at Montana State will obtain further skills in the practice and theory of financial accounting, auditing, taxation, law, and other business and professional areas. In the Lodging and Facilities Management option at Montana State, students focus both on hotel and lodging management and the art and science of running facilities that include guest ranches, sports and recreation facilities, spas, community recreation programs and more. Lodging and Facilities Management students learn about subjects such as lodging operations, sustainability in hospitality, rural hospitality, customer service and event planning not only within the classroom but also with two mandatory internships, thus ensuring that students are prepared to enter the industry with plenty of hands-on experience before graduation.
