The Computer Engineering program at Montana State is an interdisciplinary major that incorporates substantial coursework from both Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Students learn common skills in science, mathematics, electronics and circuits as well as additional computer science and computer architecture courses to round out their understanding of the field. With hands-on experiences in labs across campus and a mandatory capstone project to display their skills in their senior year, Computer Engineering graduates have a great reputation for confidence and effectiveness in engineering design, analysis and troubleshooting.

In the Dietetics program at Montana State, students interested in pursuing a career as a registered dietician gain a strong foundational understanding in food and nutrition, food service management and clinical nutrition. At the conclusion of their undergraduate study, Dietetics students should be prepared to enter a graduate degree-level dietetic internship such as the Montana Dietetic Internship, which is required in order to be eligible to take the exam for dietetic registration.

In the Gianforte School of Computing at Montana State, graduate students apply their computing skills to high-level problems in order to push computing in new directions. In the Sustainable Food Systems graduate program at Montana State, candidates dig further into special topics on sustainability and the food industry to better understand the relation between food systems and public health. Sustainable Food Systems graduate student projects can potentially cover a broad range of topics, including but not limited to food system education and public awareness, how local food systems can localize diets, institutional purchasing of local foods, food policies, community supported agriculture, food processing and distribution, community food security, community-based food and nutrition assistance and more. Additionally, students are able to tailor the program to their specific interests by taking coursework connected to health promotion and education, political science, economics, business, Native American Studies, agriculture and food science.

Students in the Chemistry (Professional) program at Montana State delve into a core of chemistry courses and technical electives to prepare for careers within the field, as well as medicine, patent law, science writing and more. Depending on their interests, students are also encouraged to engage with additional mathematics and/or physics courses as well. Additionally, all students in the Chemistry (Professional) program are assigned to an on-campus lab to conduct laboratory research as part of their degree, preparing them for either on-the-job laboratory work or higher education.

Montana State’s Master of Architecture program is specifically designed to hone the creative and scientific skills obtained in a candidate’s undergraduate studies with comprehensive design studios, investigative projects and preparation to take the ARE in order to become a registered architect. Candidates will have opportunities to forge their design sensibilities and scientific knowledge with explorations of sustainable building practices and the impact of architecture and the environment.

As part of the Plant Biotechnology program at Montana State, students gain a strong foundation in the field by completing coursework through the first two years of the program in diverse subjects including chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, genetics and other allied sciences. Once the general biotechnology coursework is complete, Plant Biotechnology students then study and address the various problems facing the various issues facing plant production and plant-related agricultural systems.

Microbiology is a diverse discipline that has become an umbrella term for a variety of studies, including bacteriology, mycology, protozoology, phycology, parasitology and virology. In the Environmental Health program at Montana State, students are able to delve into the study of medical microbiology, virology, immunology and molecular biology in order to prepare for careers in the public health sector.

In the Geographic Information Science/Planning program at Montana State, students use a mix of technical skills and academic training to prepare to enter the fields of planning and resource management. Students will be prepared as map makers, spatial analysts and planners as they work in an active hands-on environment.

Students in the Physics program at Montana State work closely with faculty on cutting-edge research projects that range from subjects as varied as astrophysics, biophysics, optics and space science. The Professional option in the Physics program is specifically designed to prepare motivated students for graduate study with a sound background in the fundamentals of physics and mathematics, as well as hands-on research opportunities within state-of-the-art facilities. Graduates of the Professional program go on to continue their studies at schools such as Caltech, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
