Human fitness is a personally rewarding and increasingly important field of study in today’s world. Health and Movement Studies takes a practical, hands-on approach. Combining courses in exercise science, psychology, and health and fitness, this major will help you arrive at a complete, real-world understanding of your field.

You’ll develop a broad-based understanding of the human body and explore how you can use that knowledge to help others achieve higher levels of fitness. You’ll also learn how to analyze a person’s fitness level and teach or correct a movement. By investigating the psychology of motivation, you’ll be able to inspire people to reach their goals.

Located on a beautiful limestone bluff overlooking the Ohio River, Hanover is the perfect place to study environmental science and the natural world. State-of-the-art labs and equipment are at your disposal.

Outside the classroom, opportunities abound. Explore our 500-acre nature preserve of forested ravines with hiking trails. Check out our Environmental Education Center, community garden, campus arboretum and Natural History Museum. Environmental stewardship is a core value here, and you can make a difference while you’re still in school with local service projects and green initiatives.

Majors and non-majors alike participate fully in private lessons, solo performances and group performances. Concert Band, College-Community Orchestra, Saxophone Ensemble, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers perform throughout the academic year, both on campus and, in some cases, on international tours. If you are a music major, you can choose between a choral or instrumental program and gain practical experience that launches your career or graduate studies.

Physics is a quest for understanding the principles that govern vastly diverse phenomena, from subatomic particles to our entire universe of stars and galaxies. It lies at the foundation of all natural science and supports numerous areas of engineering and technology shaping our way of life. At the Department of Physics and Astronomy, students enjoy small, rigorous classes working one-on-one with dedicated professors. Explore your interests further in Directed Studies, get involved in a research project, present your findings, study abroad, and gain work experience with local industry.

If you love watching movies set in the past, reading historical fiction or re-enacting history at military encampments, you understand history is alive. As a Hanover history major, you’ll study much more than just names and dates.

You may delve into the causes of the Holocaust, the sources of Lincoln’s greatness, the role of technology in war, our roles as members of a family, the triumph of Enlightenment rationalism, the meaning of our Constitution and much more. In other words, you learn to search for an interpretation of the past. At Hanover, as you learn to understand the past, you build the perspective and critical-thinking skills that enable you to succeed in a fast-changing world.

At Hanover, English majors read, write and study literature in order to investigate the basic human impulse to make sense of life through art.

You’ll study traditional literary works as well as underrepresented voices that may be new to you. Our award-winning faculty and visiting scholars will challenge you with new ideas. Develop your own creative writing and contribute to the student-run literary magazine, newspaper or coffee house readings. Travel abroad to discover your literary roots. As you advance in your studies, take one of our unique, in-depth seminars focused on a literary master. The major culminates with an independent research or creative project you design yourself.

The Medieval-Renaissance Studies major is an interdepartmental major that will focus your attention on the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and their classical antecedents. This major will give you the structure of discipline-specific courses (including history, literature and art history) and the flexibility of working across scholarly disciplines.

If you want to declare this major, you must have your major programs approved by the Medieval-Renaissance Committee before entering your junior year; subsequent changes in major programs must also be approved by the Committee.

At Hanover, students use chemistry to better understand the issues faced by modern society. Maybe your interest is life-saving antibiotics or new kinds of synthetic fibers. Maybe you want to learn how to measure pesticides in drinking water or the antioxidants in food. It’s all possible to explore in the superbly equipped labs at your disposal.

You’ll begin with an introduction to the breadth of chemistry, followed by a deeper study of advanced subjects. Your program will culminate with a collaborative research project in which you’ll explore an area of interest to you, with the help from a member of Hanover’s highly specialized faculty. Along the way, you will become a person who speaks the language of chemistry, thinks critically and solves problems.

At Hanover, studying economics will lead you to an understanding of the financial issues that drive local and world events – wealth, poverty, business, politics, stock markets, recession, employment, taxes and more. By developing a broad perspective, you’ll prepare for much more than making a living, you’ll prepare to make a difference.

Through meaningful service and opportunities to travel on extended field trips with our faculty in the U.S. and abroad, you’ll learn about economic challenges facing today’s world, and explore how you can help overcome them. The study of economics prepares you to excel in the continually changing and increasingly interconnected global economy.

As a Hanover art major, you’ll travel to cities near and far to study historical masterpieces. But your experience will be decidedly 21st century. By exploring the breadth of media at your fingertips in the modern world – from drawing to painting to sculpture to photography – you’ll discover for yourself which medium best expresses your vision in a particular work of art.
