Mathematics students at Hanover learn to reason through problems to find a solution, express ideas clearly and recognize relations among seemingly dissimilar situations. As a mathematics major, you will become a creative thinker who can analyze a wide range of situations. You will master the skill of simplifying the complex. With small class sizes and a dedicated faculty, Hanover also lets you follow your particular interests through internships and independent study programs.

As a Hanover sociology student, you’ll learn to step outside your own class, ethnicity and gender to see the world from other points on the social spectrum. You’ll quickly apply your class work in practical settings.

Maybe your class will visit the penitentiary or homeless shelter. Maybe you will travel to Arizona to study Native American sociology or to a major European city to study urban society. You’ll grow to understand the large social forces and structures that impact lives and how we can affect them. With highly dedicated and accessible faculty, you’ll build the scientific and interpersonal skills needed for success in the social sciences.

What is the self? Does God exist? Why are some actions considered right and others wrong? What is the relationship between the world and us? As a Hanover philosophy student, you’ll grapple with life’s biggest questions in a remarkably broad range of classes.

You’ll also explore individual interests with accomplished, diverse faculty members. From contemporary political thought to Taoism and Cooking, these courses will challenge you to experiment with new ideas and further your own personal development.

The Business Scholars Pathway is an application-focused educational journey that pairs traditional business education with practical, real-world experience resulting in highly sought career-ready graduates. Our business faculty and career center staff closely follow hiring trends and employer needs, and dynamically tailor the program to respond to emerging needs. 

In partnership with the Levett Career Center, the Business Scholars Program includes other enhancements to the traditional business major and minor, including:

As a Biology student at Hanover, you will become immersed in the study of living things. Gain valuable field experience in the remarkable forests, wildlife refuges and state parks located nearby and on our 650-acre campus overlooking the Ohio River – an ever-changing outdoor classroom.

Work directly with professors in class and modern labs and participate in the Biology Department’s Summer Research Program, which provides you with real research experience working directly with top scientists in the fields of Animal Behavior, Evolution, Botany, Immunology, Development, Genetics or Systematics. Our students receive outstanding preparation for many careers, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary and related fields, and have a remarkable record of acceptance into professional schools and in establishing notable careers in the biological sciences.

With a broad interdisciplinary base, the gender studies major at Hanover allows you to look at the subject of gender through a variety of lenses. The departments of theology, sociology, philosophy, psychology, political science, art history and English all have something to teach you about gender.

You’ll look at gender in various cultures and how it shapes people’s experiences and world views. You’ll break down your own assumptions through dynamic class discussions and experiences. For many students, the major is not so much a body of knowledge as it is a deeply personal path of inquiry. The major is often combined with second major.

At Hanover, political science helps students become independent thinkers and tomorrow’s leaders. You’ll study governments, public policies and political processes in classes small enough for informal, in-depth discussions.

Maybe you’ll discuss the causes of war or the place of law in society. Maybe you’ll explore politics and film, or society in contemporary Africa. Because your professors know you, they often will tailor instruction to your interests. If you like good food with your politics, you’ll want to join the group that meets regularly for sessions called Pizza and Politics.

One species with 6,000 languages and countless cultural manifestations. Anthropology students study what it means to be human and use that knowledge to navigate relationships. With an emphasis in cultural anthropology, Hanover will help you develop an understanding of your own culture and the diverse cultures of those very different from you.

Our accomplished faculty will closely mentor you, and you may have the opportunity to assist with research or even co-author journal articles. As you learn about the complexities of human communication, you can use it to help people understand each other – whether in political situations, business dealings or family institutions.

As a Hanover art major, you’ll travel to cities near and far to study historical masterpieces. But your experience will be decidedly 21st century. By exploring the breadth of media at your fingertips in the modern world – from drawing to painting to sculpture to photography – you’ll discover for yourself which medium best expresses your vision in a particular work of art. This interdisciplinary experience, rather than an intense focus on a single form, will help you become a critical thinker and problem-solver. Majors and non-majors alike participate fully in private lessons, solo performances and group performances. Concert Band, College-Community Orchestra, Saxophone Ensemble, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers perform throughout the academic year, both on campus and, in some cases, on international tours. If you are a music major, you can choose between a choral or instrumental program and gain practical experience that launches your career or graduate studies.
