Communication students learn through hands-on experience at Hanover. Small class sizes mean you’ll put communication theory into action right from the start and acquire an impressive amount of real-world experience by the time you graduate.

In fact, communication majors at Hanover College have the kind of opportunities only given to graduate students at most other schools.

• Media
  • Students can begin work in the campus TV station their freshman year, both on-camera and behind the scenes. Students produce and anchor talk, sports, news and variety programs. They travel around the world producing documentaries that are seen on PBS stations and at conferences and film festivals.
• Research
  • Every year several senior research papers are accepted to prestigious national conferences, with departmental grants providing funding for our students to travel and present. Recently, senior Rachel Helt presented her paper “Breaking Bad News: The experience of patient physician communication when diagnosed with cancer” at the Health Communication Conference in Washington, D.C.
• Rhetoric
  • Communication scholars readily discuss the latest political campaign, messages of pop music lyrics and social movements throughout history. Recently John Dean, the former White House counsel for President Richard Nixon, visited the Communication Law and Public Policy class and answered student questions about Watergate and Vietnam.

As a Hanover art major, you’ll travel to cities near and far to study historical masterpieces. But your experience will be decidedly 21st century. By exploring the breadth of media at your fingertips in the modern world – from drawing to painting to sculpture to photography – you’ll discover for yourself which medium best expresses your vision in a particular work of art. This interdisciplinary experience, rather than an intense focus on a single form, will help you become a critical thinker and problem-solver. Best of all, at Hanover, you’ll find inspiring faculty artists and a supportive environment where you can explore your own style and strengths.

Computing is a discipline that requires and develops capabilities in solving deep, multidimensional problems requiring imagination and sensitivity to a variety of concerns. A major in computer science will provide you with a foundation of knowledge, problem solving skills and habits of logical thinking that will serve as a competitive advantage to you in whatever career you pursue.

If you want to make a positive difference in the world, study computing. Computing drives innovation in the sciences (such as the human genome project, AIDS vaccine research, environmental monitoring and protection, just to mention a few), and also in engineering, business, entertainment and education.

At Hanover, English majors read, write and study literature in order to investigate the basic human impulse to make sense of life through art.

You’ll study traditional literary works as well as underrepresented voices that may be new to you. Our award-winning faculty and visiting scholars will challenge you with new ideas. Develop your own creative writing and contribute to the student-run literary magazine, newspaper or coffee house readings. Travel abroad to discover your literary roots. As you advance in your studies, take one of our unique, in-depth seminars focused on a literary master. The major culminates with an independent research or creative project you design yourself.

Watch an audience erupt in laughter as you deliver your line perfectly. Write a scene that draws tears from a full house. Create a set that places the viewer in another world. With Hanover’s Theatre program, you have the opportunity to be a multifaceted producer/playwright/actor and director.

Four main-stage productions, numerous student written and directed pieces, and hands-on experience will help you discover your talent in the world of the stage. Non-majors receive class credit and are encouraged to participate in productions as well.

Hanover’s Theatre department, together with its play-production arm, the Hanover College Theatre, will involve and educate you in all aspects of theatre in the context of a liberal arts education. You can:

• Take courses in everything from acting, directing, design and playwriting, to stage combat, global theatre and theatre management. You can even study-abroad in London and Stratford-on-Avon.
• Major or minor in theatre, or simply participate in it as extra-curricular activity.
• Be involved in four to five main stage productions during the season, as well as many additional student-originated shows, including an all-student-run comedy improv troupe.
• Not just act, but direct, design, and write for the main stage as well.
• Take advantage of internships and assisted summer-work activities in theatre.

As a Biology student at Hanover, you will become immersed in the study of living things. Gain valuable field experience in the remarkable forests, wildlife refuges and state parks located nearby and on our 650-acre campus overlooking the Ohio River – an ever-changing outdoor classroom.

Work directly with professors in class and modern labs and participate in the Biology Department’s Summer Research Program, which provides you with real research experience working directly with top scientists in the fields of Animal Behavior, Evolution, Botany, Immunology, Development, Genetics or Systematics. Our students receive outstanding preparation for many careers, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary and related fields, and have a remarkable record of acceptance into professional schools and in establishing notable careers in the biological sciences.

At Hanover, students use chemistry to better understand the issues faced by modern society. Maybe your interest is life-saving antibiotics or new kinds of synthetic fibers. Maybe you want to learn how to measure pesticides in drinking water or the antioxidants in food. It’s all possible to explore in the superbly equipped labs at your disposal.

You’ll begin with an introduction to the breadth of chemistry, followed by a deeper study of advanced subjects. Your program will culminate with a collaborative research project in which you’ll explore an area of interest to you, with the help from a member of Hanover’s highly specialized faculty. Along the way, you will become a person who speaks the language of chemistry, thinks critically and solves problems.

As you study human behavior and the mind with Hanover’s accomplished, widely published faculty, you’ll learn that all of life is a process of inquiry. Unlike any other school, you’ll design and conduct your own research projects at least four times in the course of your studies.

In fact, all seniors present their projects at an undergraduate research conference. For hands-on experience, maybe you’ll conduct low-level therapy in controlled situations on campus. Or maybe you’ll intern with a local psychiatric hospital or community agency. As a psychology student at Hanover, you will have a better understanding of how and why people act, think and feel the way they do.

As an international studies student, you’ll become a confident, competent global citizen who is prepared to take an active role in the growing global community.

With their extensive international experience, Hanover’s multilingual faculty has helped students understand the complexities of international interdependence and has produced two Fulbright scholars. International studies majors have interned with the United Nations in New York City, with foreign embassies in Washington, D.C. and with the Inter-Paliamentary Union in Geneva.

Maybe you’ll travel to Brussels to learn about the economics of the European Union or to Africa to understand African politics and societies. Certainly, you’ll broaden your perspective on the cultural, economic and political issues that are keys to success in today’s world.

Physics is a quest for understanding the principles that govern vastly diverse phenomena, from subatomic particles to our entire universe of stars and galaxies. It lies at the foundation of all natural science and supports numerous areas of engineering and technology shaping our way of life.
