The Psychological Sciences Department offers a master's (M.A.) degree with an emphasis in Behavioral Neuroscience (BN). The BN program has adopted an apprenticeship model of graduate training in which each student works closely and continuously with a faculty member within the realm of the faculty member's research interests. The MBA program is designed to accommodate a busy professional’s life by offering classes in the evening, online or in a hybrid format, enabling students to balance school, work, and life. MBA students may choose to build a general, broad-ranging program or focus with an emphasis in accounting, business analytics, cybersecurity, finance, information systems and technology, international business, management, marketing and supply chain management.

Emphasis areas are available in: Accounting, Business Analytics, Cybersecurity, Finance, Information Systems and Technology, International Business, Management, Marketing and Supply Chain Management.

The Business Administration degree offers an option to earn a general business degree. This 120-credit-hour program requires that at least 48-credit hours be filled with business courses including accounting, information systems concepts, business analytics and statistics, supply chain management, finance, management, marketing and more. Once you’ve completed your required courses, you can customize your degree with business electives, even selecting a minor, if you choose.

Business students learn and collaborate in a state-of-the-art facility outfitted with smart classrooms containing all the latest teaching technology, cutting edge seminar rooms, group learning environments, community spaces and a real-time stock ticker. The college also offers frequent career fairs, including career-specific opportunities and internships. In addition, faculty engage students in service learning opportunities which provide value and help transform lives in the surrounding communities.

Outcomes and Career Outlook

Throughout the program, students will be exposed to core business functions and contemporary business administration frameworks needed to be successful in a variety of fields. Students will be prepared to enter the workforce and succeed locally or globally across a wide range of business professions.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in business and financial operations occupations will grow five percent from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations. This, paired with salaries that are higher than the median average, makes a career in business very inviting and rewarding.

The BS in Secondary Education, with an emphasis in English, prepares students to teach in secondary school settings, grades 9-12. This program requires the selection and completion of required coursework in English and includes field and practicum experiences in high school settings, culminating in Missouri teacher certification.

This program coordinates with the Department of English. Much of the discipline-specific coursework parallels the BA degree in English; however, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requires specific coursework for teacher certification.

The department offers a Master of Arts degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, which provides students with advanced theoretical and methodological training for research and management careers in criminal justice.

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the theories, methods and substance of issues in criminology and criminal justice and demonstrate an ability to synthesize knowledge in these areas.
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of interdisciplinary underpinnings (e.g., from sociology, psychology, political science, economics) of criminology and criminal justice issues and policies.
• Develop critical thinking and communication skills through the application of criminological theory and social science research methods.
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the structure and functioning of the fundamental institutions (e.g., legislatures, police, punishment, supervisory) that are part of criminal justice systems.
• Develop comprehensive understanding of the role of research and its application for informing policies about criminal justice issues.

The BA in Physics is designed to combine the rigorous study of physics with additional studies of languages and the liberal arts and is tailored to students wishing to preserve the option for specialization in graduate school without sacrificing the advantages of a liberal arts education. This program provides undergraduates with a broad-based education in the fundamental concepts of physics and with the experimental and theoretical skills essential to practicing scientists. This degree is ideal preparation for a career that combines science with other fields, such as science journalism, science policy or patent law.

Students seeking to major in physics are designated as ‘pre-physics majors’ until they have completed both Physics 2111 and Physics 2112 (or equivalent courses) with grades of C- or better.

The Master of Arts in English program, a 30 credit-hour degree with concentrations in either literature or composition and rhetoric, furthers the education and advances the professional skills of teachers in high schools and middle schools in the St. Louis area; it prepares students for PhD programs in English studies, American studies, and composition; it prepares students for employment in community colleges as teachers of composition; and it provides opportunities for members of the St. Louis community to broaden their understanding of literature. The program contributes in substantial and measurable ways to the development and enhancement of the region's humanities workforce.

• Acquire advanced knowledge of traditional philosophical issues in the western tradition.
• Develop critical thinking skills based on knowledge of the standards governing logical reasoning.
• Acquire familiarity with philosophical issues that arise in some other disciplines (e.g. biology, art, education, etc.).
• Acquire a basic understanding of ethical principles and their role in resolving ethical disputes.
• Acquire the knowledge and skills required to write a paper identifying a philosophical issue and presenting arguments supporting a thesis for resolving it.

Bachelor of Science students are prepared for a career in the chemical industry, graduate work in the chemical sciences, health sciences, medicine, business, marketing or law. The BS degree is intended for those who want to become professional chemists or as preparation for graduate study in chemistry or biochemistry.

The BS in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Middle School Education, is a small, personalized program that combines the child-centered philosophy of elementary certification with a content specialization more typical of secondary certification. Middle school majors earn certification in one or more content areas for grades 5-9: math; science; communication arts or social studies.

Students gain skills and insights that can be applied as innovative educators, managers and directors, program planners and curriculum developers. You’ll have the opportunity to earn specific credentials, as needed, and to pursue academic minors related to your individual career goals.
