NWU Gender Studies majors see the world as so much more than black and white. If you’re deeply curious and comfortable with complexity, then an NWU Gender Studies degree is made for you.

NWU Gender Studies is Nebraska Wesleyan’s most interdisciplinary academic program. It features professors from 11 fields of study—men and women who teach everything from anthropology to theatre.

Because gender influences so many fields—from health science to history—gender studies is a popular choice among NWU students with multiple majors. Their appreciation of gender’s complexity makes them better professionals, no matter which fields they choose for their careers.

Take business as one example. Competence in gender issues will give you a better understanding of your customers, your employees, your partners and the organizations around you. You will profit in multiple ways from that increased understanding.

The combination of chemistry-based curriculum with a significant biology research component prepares our students for postgraduate studies in biomedical sciences. While biochemistry focuses on the structure and function of compounds like DNA, enzymes and proteins, molecular biology focuses on how molecules convert information into chemical reactions. Hands-on experimentation is central to the curriculum, which allows students to engage in high-level work that most of their peers do not experience until graduate school.

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Theatre Arts is the traditional liberal arts theatre degree that provides students broad-based theatre knowledge in each of the collaborative areas. It prepares students for graduate study, professional theatre careers, and may serve as preparation for law, ministry, or educational careers. It emphasizes cultural understanding, aesthetic sensitivity, and creative skill.

This degree program is geared for the person who wishes to teach theatre arts in a secondary school where the focus of teaching responsibilities is primarily theatre classes. Different than a language arts education degree, this program can lead to a supplemental endorsement in secondary theatre education when combined with a primary area endorsement.

In addition to pursuing a well-rounded theatre curriculum, we encourage theatre education students to work closely with faculty as members in all areas of production to gain foundational knowledge and skills in those areas they'll teach and supervise as theatre educators: acting, directing, costuming, scenography, playwriting, theatre history and management.

NWU International Studies is all about crossing borders. That begins on campus by crossing the boundaries between academic departments. NWU International Studies gives you the variety of perspectives you need for a fuller understanding of the world we share.

You’ll add experience through study abroad, language learning and service as well as through Nebraska Wesleyan’s diverse forum speakers, campus events and student groups.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) are academically equivalent within the department.

Admission into the Education Department and additional education departmental coursework is required. This major is designed to prepare students for the teaching profession in Health and Physical Education. With the addition of approximately 37 hours of education requirements, the student will be eligible for a Nebraska Teaching Certificate.

The program’s curriculum is split into a generalist curriculum and a specialized curriculum. The generalist curriculum consists of 32 credits hours, including the completion of a 400-hour practicum experience. Once students have completed the generalist curriculum, they will be allowed to progress to the specialized curriculum, which consists of 34 credit hours of advanced coursework, including a minimum of 500 hours of practicum experience. Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE accredited program may be able to begin the program with advanced standing and start directly into the specialized curriculum.
