We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.

There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.

Wildlife Ecology and Conservation - Emphasis
Environmental sustainability and conservation has never been more important than it is today. Students in the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation emphasis program will develop knowledge and skills to help protect Earth and all of its inhabitants.

Combining biology, chemistry, ecology, and other natural sciences, this emphasis features a focus on the conservation, protection, and management of wildlife and their natural habitats. Students will benefit from an integrated curriculum that allows them to learn about wildlife from all angles.

Pittsburg State University’s Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences consists of those specialties that have emerged as so desirable in the 21st century labor force. Students use the tools from Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Sociology and Social Work programs and coursework to examine issues and to find sustainable solutions to complex problems affecting individuals, families, and society.

The Department of Technology and Workforce Learning offers a Master of Science degree with a major in Technology. Within the program, students may choose to have no emphasis or may select from nine emphasis areas. This program provides advanced instruction in technical, scientific, managerial and supervisory areas for those working in technical and management positions in business and industry. The program consists of 30-33 credit hours.

The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences offers baccalaureate degrees and a cooperative master’s degree program. B.S. programs are offered in Nutrition and Wellness, Community and Family Services, and two tracks in Child Development. A B.S.E. program is offered in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The department has an Early Childhood Unified: Birth - Kindergarten program. The department offers minors in Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Ecology, Nutrition and Wellness, and Youth and Adolescent Development. The department also contributes to minors in Women’s Studies and Public Health. 

Nutrition and Wellness - Emphasis
The Nutrition and Wellness concentration appeals to students who want to work in settings where they would apply knowledge about nutrition in the community setting. (This is not a dietetics program.) This concentration builds upon the Family and Consumer Sciences focus, which is the application of the sciences to the betterment of individuals, families, and communities.

Located within the Kansas Technology Center, the Department of Automotive Technology is recognized by industry as offering one of the best academic programs in the nation. The College of Arts and Sciences along with College of Technology offer a Master of Materials Science degree program. The Master of Materials Science prepares students for careers in industry and also for postgraduate degrees in materials science, engineering and related fields. This program is collaboratively designed to be an interdisciplinary degree between the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technology. Such an interdisciplinary STEM program will provide hands-on, academic activities and practical experiences for students, readying them to join the workforce.

Our geography students acquire superior skills in critical thinking and analysis, dynamic communication, computer usage, and analysis in a number of software areas. We strive to keep students on the cutting edge of technology. These technological skills, critical thinking skills, and the overall applied nature of a geography education provide students with abilities that are in demand at public and private agencies. Students also gain the expert knowledge and training they need to pursue admission to graduate programs, if that is part of their career plan.

Geographic Information Systems - Emphasis
The Geographic Information Systems degree emphasis (GIS) combines computer-based technological application, data management, modeling, and statistical analysis with the explanatory powers of maps, spatial distribution, and digital display. It involves cutting-edge computer technology and advanced skills that are in high demand in many professions. GIS skills are highly desirable for many types of employment, including community planning, environmental planning, and environmental management.

Ecology and Field Biology - Emphasis
The Ecology and Field Biology emphasis covers a wide range of topics, including physiological ecology, natural selection, population biology, ecosystem dynamics, and more. Combing both lab and field activities, this program gives students a hands-on, interactive look at the fascinating relationships between organisms.

This track is recommended for students pursuing a career and/or graduate study in ecology, evolutionary biology, environmental science, zoology, wildlife biology, conservation, and more.

The Master of Arts Degree in English with an Emphasis in Literature is designed for students who enjoy the challenge of analyzing great works of British, American, and international authors, of engaging with the ideas and themes found in the best that has been thought and said, and of tracing the grand arcs of literary history. This graduate level English degree can be earned by achieving one of three options.

Pittsburg State University's Department of Chemistry prepares students for careers in science, chemical engineering, pharmacy, chemistry teaching, pre-engineering, and other university programs that require rigorous training in chemistry. Biochemistry - Emphasis
Biochemistry is the field of science resulting from the overlap of biology and chemistry. Biochemists explore the reactions, architecture, and role of biological molecules within a living system. To prepare students for careers in biochemistry, the Department of Chemistry at Pittsburg State University offers a four-year Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Chemistry and Emphasis in Biochemistry.
