The Department of Physics at Pittsburg State University was founded in 1962 and has been dedicated to the outstanding teaching of undergraduate and graduate physics students ever since. Our faculty members are trained in a wide variety of physics-related fields and have industrial and research laboratory experience. Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

Master of Science in Psychology with Emphasis in Behavior Analysis
The Master of Science Degree Program in Psychology with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced training in behavior analysis. Students pursuing this degree will be eligible for certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This degree will prepare students to apply behavioral laws to influence positive behavior change and improve the lives of clients.

Master of Science in Career and Technical Education - Technology and Engineering Education
The Department of Technology and Workforce Learning offers a Master of Science degree with a major in Career and Technical Education. Within the program, students will select from four different emphasis areas. This program is designed to provide preparation for persons interested in qualifying for teaching and administrative positions in health occupations and technical education at the community college and college level.
Options available for the degree:
Option I: Thesis
This option is designed to prepare students for a doctoral program, for advanced professional careers, or for students wanting to complete an in-depth research experience.
Option III: Course Work
This option requires completion of course work that demonstrates evidence of advanced course work in an area of concentration. Departments will require evidence of competency through activities such as research papers, portfolios, practice, internships, comprehensive exams or other individual work. Students should check with their major department for specific requirements for the coursework.

Pittsburg State University's Department of Chemistry prepares students for careers in science, chemical engineering, pharmacy, chemistry teaching, pre-engineering, and other university programs that require rigorous training in chemistry. It offers eight Bachelor of Science Degrees, two Master of Science Degrees, and one minor.
Chemistry Polymer - Emphasis
Polymer chemistry is the branch of chemistry that studies the synthesis, characterization, and processing of macromolecules. The Polymer Division of the American Chemical Society projects that 50 percent of chemists will work with polymers during some time of their career.

The Construction Engineering Technology degree (Bachelor of Science Engineering Technology) was created in 1979 to provide our construction program with an engineering concepts emphasis and to support industry needs. The Construction Engineering Technology program requires students to complete a strong core construction curriculum supported by engineering concept courses including statistics, mechanics of materials, concrete/wood/steel structures, foundation/soils, and temporary structures.

Bachelor of Science, Major in Psychology with Emphasis in Psychology, Developmental Disabilities
The Department of Psychology and Counseling has placed its graduates in schools, businesses, agencies and hospitals throughout the region, as well as provided teachers for two and four year colleges. The department enjoys a strong relationship with area mental health agencies, with many private and governmental establishments acting as training sites for students, and using department faculty and advanced graduate students as consultants. PSU is the only school within a 100 mile radius that provides graduate training in counseling, psychology and school psychology. Additionally, no other university in Kansas has an integrated psychology and counseling department, allowing the department to offer comprehensive, in-depth programs in each area and providing students with the opportunity to experience the best in both disciplines.
Psychology, Developmental Disabilities - Emphasis
As a part of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, the Developmental Disabilities concentration area prepares graduates to work in intellectual disabilities or developmental disabilities facilities or transition homes as supervisors, transition coordinators, or intellectual disabilities professionals.
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology was designed for students who want to pursue a career in a psychology-related field immediately after graduation. Historically, most careers in psychology and counseling require graduate training. However, there are a number of careers that do not.

Bachelor of Science, Major in Biology with Emphasis in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.
There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.
Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences - Emphasis
Explore the fascinating diversity of aquatic ecosystems and discover practical solutions to real-world issues as part of the Pittsburg State University Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences program. The emphasis in the Department of Biology gives students the opportunities for hands-on, interactive research into rivers, lakes, wetlands, and all of their living inhabitants.
Students in this program work alongside professional biologists on a wide range of projects focused important environmental issues such as disease, pollution, preservation, and restoration of aquatic habitats.

Bachelor of Science in Technology, Major in Environmental and Safety Management with Emphasis in Construction
The School of Construction offers a comprehensive sequence of courses in Environmental and Safety Management. This broad-based program exposes students to several aspects of environmental and workplace safety.
Environmental and Safety Management program is on the list of national board-approved programs. A student earning an environmental and safety management degree from a board-approved institution is automatically qualified for the Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) credential offered by the ISHM.
