The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) at Auburn University has over 50 professors representing diverse areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. Many of the general undergraduate classes are capped at under 30 students, meaning they are able to offer students personal attention and close contact with faculty. The program in Mathematics provides students with a general background in mathematics preparing them for graduate studies in mathematics or careers that require mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills. It is well suited for students who wish to pursue a career in teaching mathematics in a university/college, or who desire more flexibility or emphasis in liberal arts.

Are you interested in pressing cultural, political, and social issues such as health care, the environment, and civil rights? If so, then our Bachelor of Arts in political science may be for you. Our program integrates the humanities and social sciences to examine political processes, systems, and dynamics across the globe. You’ll learn about American government, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and public law. In addition, you’ll gain valuable analytical, oral, and written communication skills.

Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with mathematical methods that find use in science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge. The term "applied mathematics" also describes the professional specialty in which mathematicians work on practical problems by formulating and studying mathematical models. In the past, practical applications have motivated the development of mathematical theories, which then became the subject of study in pure mathematics where abstract concepts are studied for their own sake. The activity of applied mathematics is thus intimately connected with research in pure mathematics.

The program, a joined offering of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, is designed to develop within its graduates a basic foundation in wireless engineering that will provide the technical proficiency needed for the professional practice of engineering in the wireless industry, the ability to communicate their ideas effectively within the technical community and the general public and an enthusiasm for lifelong scientific inquiry.

To complete the program you must:

• Choose a specialized track - wireless hardware or wireless software
• For the wireless hardware track, complete coursework including circuit analysis, communications, digital systems, electronics, electromagnetism and wireless communications and networks
• For the wireless software track, complete coursework including wireless software engineering, embedded systems, software process and quality assurance

The non-thesis Master of Science in Materials Engineering provides students an advanced level of knowledge in mechanical properties, materials structure, materials thermodynamics, kinetics and electrical, optical and magnetic properties of materials.

Processes are those found deep within the Earth where temperatures and pressures are high, as well as those that take place under low-temperature, low-pressure conditions at the Earth's surface, where organic as well as inorganic processes are found. The history of the planet is recorded in rock and mineral products and in the record of life as preserved by fossils.
