Sociology is the systematic study of human social life. The B.A. in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory. Civil engineers use scientific knowledge and hands-on creativity to solve 21st-century problems: designing for sustainability, safely constructing the built environment, maintaining our aging infrastructure systems, and providing service worldwide to people in great need.

With a civil engineering degree, you could be involved in the design, construction or operation of many critical facilities. This could be anything from highways to high-rise buildings, from bridges to hospitals and airports – just to name a few.

Our civil engineering program will give you the foundation for practice and advanced study in:

• Geotechnical Engineering – looking at the mechanics of minerals, rocks, soil and water to determine what’s required for man-made structures built on or around them.
• Structural Engineering – making sure structures are designed and built to be safe and resilient to environmental stresses.
• Transportation and Construction Management – using engineering skills to oversee transportation and other large projects, in terms of schedule, cost, safety, quality, function and scope.
• Environmental and Water Resources Engineering – creating solutions to environmental problems such as waste and pollution, and ensuring access to clean water for human use.

By enrolling in the anthropology program at the University of Mississippi, you'll study society and culture of the past and present. The four-field discipline includes archaeology, bioanthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology.

Anthropology is the comparative study of human culture. The department offers a broad range of courses dealing with human evolution, the culture of peoples from around the world and through time, biological and cultural human adaptation, and archaeology.

The M.S. in sport and recreation administration provides advanced education and vocational opportunities to develop leisure service delivery skills and evaluation or research competencies for students committed to careers in leisure, sport, recreation, health, tourism, and/or research. Students choose either a 1) thesis, 2) special event planning, or 3) internship based on their education, experience, and career goals.

The M.A. in history is offered as either a thesis or nonthesis option. Students in the M.A. program may study a variety of topics and chronological sweeps of American and European history, as well as much of the histories of Africa, Latin America, and East Asia.

Linguistics majors at the University of Mississippi learn the layers of intertwined systems of language (sound, meaning, organization and context) and study phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. They explore the relationship between language and social factors such as region, ethnicity, gender, and identity; and how language is acquired and changes over time.

The study of linguistics, often referred to as the "science of language," provides students with an understanding of the sound systems, words, and sentence structures of language, both individually and comparatively.

Economics is the study of the allocation of resources. Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication.

Economics provides a broad and systematic way of thinking about social, financial, and business problems. The B.A. in economics prepares a graduate for many positions in business and government. Some positions are economic analyst, statistician, and research assistant.

The B.A. in classics is an interdisciplinary degree involving the study of ancient Greek and Latin, literature in translation, history, classical archaeology, and art history.

Study the nature and development of our communication abilities and learn about disorders involving impairments in hearing, speech, voice, resonance, fluency, swallowing, and language processes

Students are introduced to anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms; phonology; human development; disorders in fluency, voice, articulation, expressive and receptive language and learning and the programs and methods used to treat these disorders.
