The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases:

• Performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice;
• Music education;
• Choral conducting;
• Musicology;
• Music theory;
• Ethnomusicology;
• Collaborative piano.

Emphasis - Music Theory
The M.M. degree with an emphasis in music theory is an advanced professional degree designed to give the student a broad research background while also providing a 24-credit specialization. A thesis is required.

The Department of Mathematics offers a B.S. in mathematics for students who wish to pursue graduate training in mathematics or to undertake careers in mathematically oriented professions. The B.S. degree allows the freedom to pursue mathematical depth in areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, discrete mathematics, mathematics and computer science, or finance and actuarial science.

The M.S. in mathematics is designed primarily for students who are attracted to mathematics as a major scholarly pursuit, including students who plan eventually to work toward the doctorate in this field. The M.S. degree also prepares students who are looking for professional careers in mathematics, either as teachers or as research mathematicians.

African American Studies majors at the University of Mississippi select the following areas of specialization: culture, history, or political & social institutions. You can tailor your exploration of the African and African American experience by choosing from among 60 courses in different disciplines, including anthropology, art history, English, gender studies, history, music, political science, religion, and sociology.

University of Mississippi French majors study the language, linguistics, literature, history and culture of the French-speaking world. They gain the cultural awareness and intellectual strategies necessary to successfully navigate the interconnected and multicultural world in which we live.

The study of French provides students with the practical instruction in a second language required to function in a nonnative environment, as well as the cultural awareness and intellectual strategies necessary to successfully navigate a foreign landscape.

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at the University of Mississippi empowers students to explore their criminal justice interests from emphasis areas in corrections, homeland security or law enforcement

This program prepares students to move directly into a wide range of criminal justice careers upon graduation and is built upon practice experience. Our Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program is staffed by outstanding, highly-published faculty, each of whom is committed to providing University of Mississippi students with the best academic preparation possible.

The Department of Modern Languages offers the M.A. in modern languages with emphases in French, German, linguistics, Spanish, and teaching English as a second language (TESOL).

The Master of Science in food and nutrition services degree prepares students for doctoral studies in nutrition, food service management, or hospitality management for postsecondary teaching positions, or for careers in established or emerging clinical or industrial settings. The program is designed to provide students with a broad background in nutrition, food service management, or hospitality management; development of necessary analytical skills; and exposure to current nutrition, food service management, and hospitality management research.

The master’s graduate program in the School of Journalism and New Media offers three tracks: academic, professional, and Integrated Marketing Communications.

M.A. students without academic or professional background in journalism may be required to pursue a course of study that combines undergraduate and graduate journalism courses.

The B.S. degree in physics is recommended for students wishing to go to graduate school in physics. It also prepares a student for teaching physics, for graduate or professional schools, such as law school or education school, and for jobs in technical fields. Students interested in teaching high school physics may need a secondary education certification along with the degree.
