Philosophy is the study of the fundamental ideas underlying every dimension of human life. A major in philosophy helps one to think clearly, communicate persuasively, engage in moral reasoning, and formulate a coherent approach to life. Typically, philosophy majors go on to graduate school, law school, medical school, theological studies, or careers in business.

Philosophy majors consider the questions at the core of human experience - the nature of reality, the extent of human knowledge, the basis of moral and ethical thought and behavior, the resolution of conflict, and the origin of belief. Students may also choose an optional emphasis in religious studies.

Economics is the study of the allocation of resources. Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication.

Economics provides a broad and systematic way of thinking about social, financial, and business problems. The B.A. in economics prepares a graduate for many positions in business and government. Some positions are economic analyst, statistician, and research assistant.

The M.S. in sport and recreation administration provides advanced education and vocational opportunities to develop leisure service delivery skills and evaluation or research competencies for students committed to careers in leisure, sport, recreation, health, tourism, and/or research. Students choose either a 1) thesis, 2) special event planning, or 3) internship based on their education, experience, and career goals.

The Risk Management and Insurance major prepares students for exciting careers in an industry that has a high demand for talent. Students at Ole Miss gain marketable skills regarding the assessment and management of risk.

What will you learn?
Risk impacts individuals, businesses, and governments across the entire world. Without risk there is no reward. The RMI curriculum focuses on commercial risk management and culminates in a capstone course where you will perform a comprehensive risk management audit of a company, write a detailed report of risk control and transfer recommendations, and present your solutions to a panel of experts. You will also find out where you fit best in the industry by working as an intern - most students earn 6 hours of academic credit for working paid summer internships. Student internships include duties ranging from designing social media strategies for insurance brokers to underwriting insurance policies.

Students may earn a degree in economics at the University of Mississippi three different ways: the Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in economics, the Bachelor of Arts in economics, and the new, more technical Bachelor of Science in economics. The quantitative B.S. degree is more suitable for those who wish to prepare for graduate study in economics. Students take advanced mathematics, introductory and advanced micro and macro economics, econometrics, and mathematical economics.

The M.S. in mathematics is designed primarily for students who are attracted to mathematics as a major scholarly pursuit, including students who plan eventually to work toward the doctorate in this field. The M.S. degree also prepares students who are looking for professional careers in mathematics, either as teachers or as research mathematicians.

The Department of Modern Languages offers the M.A. in modern languages with emphases in French, German, linguistics, Spanish, and teaching English as a second language (TESOL).

Specialization - Spanish
An M.A. in Modern Languages with a specialization in Spanish allows students to focus on literature or linguistics and gives graduates a high proficiency in communicative skills and a deep awareness of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world. The degree prepares students for a teaching career at a variety of levels as well as doctoral work in the discipline.

A Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Ole Miss prepares students for allied health and fitness professions by studying contemporary issues and trends in the application of exercise for weight management, cardiopulmonary health, maintenance of functional movement, and the application of exercise science to athletic performance.

The B.S.E.S. degree program is designed for students entering allied health and fitness professions. With the degree, careers as health and fitness directors within private, municipal, corporate, and hospital- based fitness and health promotion centers are available. Students completing the B.S. degree often continue their education in exercise science, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, and other health- related graduate programs.

The M.S. in engineering science is offered in a number of emphasis areas: aeroacoustics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computational hydroscience, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electromagnetics, environmental engineering, geology, geological engineering, hydrology, mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, and telecommunications.

Emphasis - Civil Engineering
A degree of M.S. in engineering science with emphasis in civil engineering prepares a student with advanced technical knowledge and communication skills for pursuing a career in industry, engineering research and development, public service, or for doctoral work. The program offers a choice of several concentration areas: structures, geotechnical engineering, construction materials, water resource engineering, environmental engineering, transportation systems, infrastructure asset management, and earthquake and disaster response management.

Marketing students learn how to research target audiences, advise on how to develop products for consumer desires, and determine product pricing structure. Students learn to select effective channels to communicate with customers and develop and implement promotional strategies.

Marketing is a creative, fast-paced industry. Our faculty will help you get inside the mind of prospective customers so you’ll know how to promote, develop, and sell products to them. Remember, without a plan, there is no sale!

Emphasis - Global Supply Chain Management
The aim of the emphasis in global supply chain management is to expose students to two primary sets of processes through which the firm creates value for its customers by moving goods and information through marketing channels: demand-focused processes consisting of marketing, sales, and customer relationship management activities, and supply-focused processes consisting of inbound logistics, operations, and outbound logistics.
