Emphasis - Computer Science
A M.S. in engineering science with emphasis in computer science prepares a student with advanced technical knowledge and communication skills for pursuing a career in industry, engineering research and development, public service, or for doctoral work.

The B.A. in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory. The curriculum in sociology equips students to more effectively negotiate the diverse society in which we live by addressing social inequalities, culture, community development, social institutions, and social change.

The B.A. in chemistry is designed for students who wish to pursue a degree in the physical sciences with a broad liberal arts background. Some students use this degree program to prepare for admission to pharmacy school or as the basis for studies in environmental law. Students interested in teaching chemistry at the high-school level may use this degree to prepare for alternate route teacher certification by following a specified curriculum with a minor in either biological science, mathematics, or physics.

Students who pursue the major in African American studies will get a broad-based understanding of research in a variety of academic disciplines, with a particular focus on African and African American topics. Students will be provided with historical and contemporary data that will enable them to develop a comprehensive understanding of the life experiences of African Americans.

The M.S. degree in chemistry is designed for students who intend to seek employment as a professional chemist or who plan to pursue the D.A. degree in chemistry at UM. This program requires the submission of a thesis based on original laboratory or theoretical research.

Chemistry investigates the composition, properties, and reactions of all substances. Called “the central science” because it is at the heart of many other scientific endeavors, many advances in the production of medicine, food, technology, and energy have been made possible through chemistry research. Because chemistry is a physical science, chemistry students are expected to have the math background needed to develop strong problem-solving skills.

The B.S. in chemistry provides a rigorous foundation in the principal areas of basic chemistry. This program is designed for students who intend to pursue advanced studies leading to the M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in the chemical or biochemical sciences, or who wish to obtain employment as entry-level professional chemists in industrial or government laboratories.
