Sociology is the systematic study of human social life. The B.A. in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory. The curriculum in sociology equips students to more effectively negotiate the diverse society in which we live by addressing social inequalities, culture, community development, social institutions, and social change.

Philosophy is the study of the fundamental ideas underlying every dimension of human life. A major in philosophy helps one to think clearly, communicate persuasively, engage in moral reasoning, and formulate a coherent approach to life. Typically, philosophy majors go on to graduate school, law school, medical school, theological studies, or careers in business.

Philosophy majors consider the questions at the core of human experience - the nature of reality, the extent of human knowledge, the basis of moral and ethical thought and behavior, the resolution of conflict, and the origin of belief. Students may also choose an optional emphasis in religious studies.

The B.A. in art is a broad liberal arts degree for students who want a general education with a strong emphasis on art and a minor in another discipline. Students who major in art are creative thinkers who visualize the world around them to create contemporary and conceptual works of art.

The Department of Modern Languages offers the M.A. in modern languages with emphases in French, German, linguistics, Spanish, and teaching English as a second language (TESOL).

Emphasis - Linguistics
tudents who specialize in linguistics will be exposed to a broad range of linguistic inquiry and will then be encouraged to develop a specific research agenda. With its strong emphasis on research and academic writing, this degree prepares students for doctoral study in general, theoretical, or applied linguistics.

Marketing students learn how to research target audiences, advise on how to develop products for consumer desires, and determine product pricing structure. Students learn to select effective channels to communicate with customers and develop and implement promotional strategies.

Marketing is a creative, fast-paced industry. Our faculty will help you get inside the mind of prospective customers so you’ll know how to promote, develop, and sell products to them. Remember, without a plan, there is no sale!

Emphasis - Digital Marketing Strategy
This emphasis focuses on developing digital skills for one of the most in- demand areas of marketing. These skills include search engine optimization, digital marketing analytics, social media management, content strategy/management, brand engagement, and consumer/behavioral analytics.

The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases: 1) performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice; 2) music education; 3) choral conducting; 4) musicology; 5) music theory; 6) ethnomusicology; and 7) collaborative piano.

There are three degrees in economics at the University of Mississippi: the Bachelor of Business Administration in economics, the Bachelor of Arts in economics, and the more technical Bachelor of Science in economics. The B.A. degree is the most flexible program that provides broad social science training. Students take introductory and advanced micro and macro economics, statistics, and then pursue their own interests with economics electives.

Economics provides a broad and systematic way of thinking about social, financial, and business problems. The B.A. in economics prepares a graduate for many positions in business and government. Some positions are economic analyst, statistician, and research assistant.

The M.S. in engineering science is offered in a number of emphasis areas: aeroacoustics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computational hydroscience, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electromagnetics, environmental engineering, geology, geological engineering, hydrology, mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, and telecommunications.

Emphasis - Hydrology and Comp Hydroscience
A M.S. in engineering science with an emphasis in computational hydroscience and engineering prepares a student with advanced technical knowledge and communication skills for pursuing a career in industry, engineering research and development, public service, or for doctoral work.

Economics is the study of the allocation of resources. Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication. The Bachelor of Science in economics is designed for students desiring a more technical and mathematical approach to economics in preparation for a Ph.D. in economics.
